Autofocus flickering?

I have a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 that sort of will flicker as if it can't find the focus. Not searching, it's only when it's real close. I'm wondering if there is a technical word for what it's doing. Sometimes it will stop and be OOF but when it's in focus, it's really quite sharp.

  Darren,

Not really sure here, but if the lens is TOO close to the subject, it can't focus as it is at the limit. Then it begins to "hunt."

Flicker to use your word.

Back up a tad when this happens, see if that helps.

Pete

Actually when I said close I should have been clearer. I mean when it's close to focusing. It does it at any distance. The focus point blinks and beeps quickly and I can see the focus change slightly ech time. It almost looks wavy in the veiwfinder. It makes me think that one of the elements is loose. Like I said though, when it gets the focus right, it's really sharp. Good price for that quality but if it won't focus I guess it doesn't matter.
