Photography Question

Shooting Structures

I would like to shoot buildings and inhance the dramatic variations of depth, testure, lines and light, etc. and don't know if it is better done in color or black and white. How can I really bring out these differences on film, are there special filters that help, is it mainly watching for the right light, are there tricks to making the light work in my favor, what becomes the important consideration in doing these types of shots? Are there just some basic rules I should start with and build on?

I can more easily visualize your idea in B&W. If you work in architecture, or are really interested in this, consider a perspective control lens. They are expensive, even used, maybe $700 for manual focus. They will tame this point-at-the-top effect in situations when you don't want it, and give you better control when you can't have the camera at the same plane as the wall. Or you could learn to work with a view camera, which also gives you this kind of control.
