Question About The EFP I am sure that these questions may ruffle some feathers although I am looking for genuine responses and am in no way trying to insult anyone so please no nasty emails... let's keep this lighthearted as I am not out to start trouble, just want to member insight/opinions. Do you have to be really active and known on BP to get an EFP? I have been going through threads, galleries and the contest entries themselves and I am just not getting it. And yes, this is triggered by my own lack of EFP's and NO I don't think my work is award winning per say but def' worthy of some EFPs, maybe even the occasional finalist. I'm not just speaking about myself though, I see truly amazing shots get past over and some very, well, I'm sorry, mediocre at best shots that get picked.(although most efp's I see are great!) I know I shouldn't have said that out loud but this is just my personal opinion. When reading various threads from regulars there seems to be almost a vibe of guarantee that they will get numerous EFP's each month regardless of skill level, and they do. I apologize if that sounds crass. I am simply trying to get a better understanding. I know the contest is more for fun than anything else. I also see a great kinmanship between those who post their EFPs and that's great. I have only been back posting for a little while after an almost 6 year hiatus, but I'm not seeing the point to keep entering and getting my hopes up if it's popular members thing. Am I getting it all wrong? Am I not facing the truth that my photos actually suck rocks? LOL.

Danea.....Valid question. It took courage to ask it. Good for you. To be honest, I sometimes feel the same way, but, I may be wrong. I've never had a winner or photo of he day, and only one finalist.

Danea, I do not think EPs are tied to popularity. Everyone starts on BP at some point. And I don't think EPs are tied to the number of comments you leave on other people's photos, or the comments you get on your own photos. If you believe BP staff, they simply look at the photo..they don't read comments and they don't see the names associated with the photo (unless it's water-marked in). I don't see any conspiracys. :-)

Thanks everyone for your responses and keeping this civil. I am thankful this didn't get nasty as I was very hesitant to even ask. Ken, I didn't mean to imply(if that's what it seemed like) that there was any conspiracy going on. I was simply asking if it's more of a contest for active members. ;) So does BP not view the entries from the contest page, because the names are very noticeable there?

Hi Danea...no, I wasn't implying you said there was a conspiracy...but in previous threads about the contest and EP process, some have suggested conspiracies. Heck, who knows...maybe there are...I'm just not personally aware of them. As for where BP views the entries..I don't know where. But Jim Miotke and his staff have publically said that they do not see the names of the photographers when judging them. So, they must have a different way to view contest entries, above/beyond what we see on BP.

The most recent claim by Jim that names are not seen by the judges is at least three years old so far as I know. I doubted that was the case then, and I certainly do not believe it is now.

On other sites, you are not permitted to enter a contest with your name on the image. No watermarks allowed.

Danea, I started with BP in October 2007 so less than a year ago. I have no fan club at all, and I think I've done pretty well, so I'd have to assume from this that you don't have to popular to get an EP, finalist, or even a winning image. I do get comments on some of my images but they are random...in other words not from the same people over and over just because we are friendly. To me it seems fair, although I also see good images passed over and bad images moving on, but anytime judges are involved you are going to have differing opinions. I think that's a good thing or the same styles of images would win all the time. The ONLY time I ever got annoyed was when my fawn image (Patiently Waiting) got passed over for the EP. I resubmitted it a few weeks later and it made it that time...go figure.

The judges aren't perfect, they are humans and the made mistakes. This is my story. I joined BP in November 2007, with no skills than just my love for photography, I didn't even have a camera (I was shooting with a video camera), and got my very first EFP along with other two in December, in the same month got a decent camera. Last January got 11 EFP and My very first Finalist, since then my numbers are going up and down. I'm no consider myself a real photographer, I never had taken a course, but I have been learn lot since I join this place, and if I ever going to win or not, this has been a wonderful place for me, besides the knowledge I have made many wonderful friends, and even joined a club. About EFP and pictures pass over , I got EFP in the third time submitting of the same picture, and once I resubmitted one of my finalists and it didn't even got EFP. If you believe that one of your pictures was pass over, resubmit it again, don’t give up.

Hi Danea, This is how BP describes EFPs "Editor's Picks represent uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found especially interesting, eye-catching, or beautiful. They are simply contest entries that have moved on from Round 1 of the contest judging." I noticed you still have a free gallery. Make sure you read New Contest Rules I don't give up on my images if they don't get an EFP, the first time around. I believe in resubmitting after reworking or simply changing categories. Also, there are many BP members getting EFPs, Finalists & Winners who aren't very active in the BP community.
