You'll get shadows with both a white and a black background, Julie. But although they ARE there, they won't be visible on a black background.

If you want to make images, indoors, without any shadows you need a light tent, (minimum) 2 identical light sources, and a tripod.

  Hi Julie,
If you work with a large light source, like a 60 inch umbrella, your shadows will be reduced, or go away entirely. This is like the difference between a sunny day with hard shadows and an overcast day with little or no shadowing. Of course you will have more problems with reflections than with a small light source. Check out my course, An Introduction to Photographic Lighting. Thanks, John Siskin
