So, from what I understand, members with a free gallery will be exempt from the free contest which will probably motivate them to buy at least a Basic/ Premium Gallery. What do you all think about this?

Didn't one of the prizes used to be a premium gallery subscription? I take it that's gone too?

Seems a bit exclusive but I guess it's a good way of making money. I thought limiting the number of entries per person would've been fairer but then again it ain't my site - they can do whatever they like!

Bit of a shame really.

Donna, if you already have a Basic/Premium gallery and you get a win, then you probably still will get a free renewal.

Since now you have to be a paying member of some kind it really isn't a free contest anymore.

Since most people pay for what is now called the " Basic " membership I guess they went with the lesser of two evils.

Considering how cheap the membership is compared to other sites , I would of rather seen them raise the price and keep the format the same.

BP still have much to offer so it will be something I and most will live with I'm sure.

Sounds fair to me. I think they had to do something and the price of a Basic is pretty darn cheap.

This is a tough call. I still think many people get the free gallery initially, and then start to enjoy BP and get a Premium (now called Basic) gallery. If they have to pay right off the bat, some will go elsewhere. Time will tell. For the folks that enjoy the contest now, with a free gallery, it's not alot of money to upgrade and you get larger thumbnails and more photos for display.

Thanks Jim for publically telling us what's going on!

I started with the free gallery and upgraded so the thumbnails were bigger and I so enjoyed the friendships, the help, the fun attitude of the many members.
Personally, I think it is a bargain, thanks Jim for providing this great site!

Thank you BP for working so hard to come up with a very fair solution to an overwhelming problem!
A lot of photography sites charge a fee right off the bat in order to join their site and it is always much higher than BP!

BP would still be a bargain at twice the price. I would expect that new people would naturally start out with a free gallery to test the waters ... same as we all did. It doesn't take most people long to realize what a great site this is, and also realize that $22/year is a small price to pay for the friendship, feedback, learning through observing/asking questions, and just outright fun of this place! It is a business for the fine BP team, and they have to make a profit or they will disappear. Simple as that. In addition, they took to heart the clamor of the crowd regarding the high number of quality images passed over in the contest due to simple logistics -- too many photos, too little time. I think Jim and his team made a wise decision in this change to the contest. Is $22/year too much to ask for the benefits we reap here? I think not.

Reference Mickey's post..it's unclear if BP will still award the gold medal for 2nd. But it does sound like they will no longer give a year's free "basic" gallery with a 2nd place..assuming they even do 2nd place anymore.

I'd be interested to know how many enteries each month came from people with free galleries. (I presume someone has done the math if the solution is to exclude them from the contest.)

I wonder if restricting it in this way is really going to have a big impact on the number of enteries. I still think the best way to do that is restrict the number of times each person can enter per month. Then you're forced to really think about what you enter and be a lot more selective.

Makes no difference to me, I'm going to go out and buy myself a shiny new Basic Gallery!

Sarah G   Announce the policy change after it's done...Guess that keeps the "noise" down, but it isn't very polite. Announcing a policy change that will be going in effect in a given amount of days would have been kind of considerate. It would have been more professional.

Of course, I'm one who has a free gallery, so I'm loosing the most here. (AND why would they want to be considerate to a "freebee/freeloader.")

However, everytime I get VERY serious about taking a class or think I'll upgrade they do something that makes me keep my money in my pocket.

This will take some thinking about. I'm certainly not going to be taking that class now. The "upgrade"...that MIGHT happen.

When I started at BP, there were no free galleries so be thankful you have had the chance to get out there for nothing. I'm sure not everyone can afford the $22, but it is cheap compared to other sites. As far as the prizes, I would personally give them all up just to keep the contest as is.

Everybody hates those first place bags anyway, they are just about worthless and I think most people would rather have their gallery extended than have one of those.
This really upsets me..The more I think about it, the madder I'm getting.

Sarah G   Carolyn, I'm with you AND always have been when it comes to the bags. IF I ever won a bag BP could save themselves some time and NOT send it to me.

Now to actually have improved in my photography that I actually earned and was "worthy" of a upgraded gallery, that was incentive.

What do the free gallery people have to say?

Anyone?

Donna I have a premium gallery but like Ken says , I started with a free gallery and over time I decided to pay for the premium gallery because I do like the format.

I wish that there was another way to go so people with free gallery could still compete in the contest. The contest is the fun part of the site and I believe is what keeps their customer base together.

Maybe some day some other change will be made to make that happen.

So ... did Jim forget to mention that there will no longer be second places given?!!

I didn't even figure that out until I read through this thread. THAT'S pretty substantial to someone like me--I've never won 1st place, much less a grand prize, and it doesn't look like it's in the cards any time soon. But finalists and 2nd place--I don't even care about the prizes--are really rewarding.

So, does all this mean there won't even be finalists? If they're taking away 2nd place, then ....?

Sorry, everybody, I think I just answered my own question. I think Dennis is right--they're just taking away the 2nd place prize of the free "basic" gallery.

That makes sense, because they're basing eligibility to enter the contest on us paying .... but I don't know what happens to the free "basic" galleries we may have already won with our 2nd places ...

Colleen, I just had my first 2nd place winner in the May contest. With that win, my basic gallery was exended for one year past the date it would have expired. My paid year was due to expire on 9/10/08. But I just now checked my expiration date, and it says 9/10/09 -- so they did indeed honor the award they gave me for the May contest by extending me for a year for free. If you click on Member Info, then click on Basic BetterPholio, it should show an expiration date that takes into account your past 2nd place wins.

I'm pretty certain that if you have a "basic" gallery on the books thru 2009, or 2012, or whatever, that BP will honor it. You've already won those year(s), if you got a 2nd place.

Perhaps Jim will chime in on this thread to give the facts on the gold buttons.

Maybe they could offer a one year extension on the basic OR a bag for first place. Since the winner has to pay for shipping (and that can be a lot for someone who doesn't live in the US), this choice might be very attractive, not only to those who already have one or don't want one but to others who must pass the bag up because it costs too much to get it.

I'll weigh in by saying I hope they keep the finalist and 2nd place win badges, too, prize or no prize; and I can't imagine their doing otherwise since I'm sure they realize that the fun of winning is what's most important to most of us.

I don't know why they wouldn't still have finalists..and IMO there should be a hell of a lot more of them than there have been lately..then maybe it wouldn't be so bad not having any second prizes....I don't follow their thinking. I'm in the same boat as Colleen. In all the years I've been here entering diligently every month, I've NEVER gotten a first prize, and probably never will, so I guess I don't much care what they use for a prize, I was just saying I've heard from many people that the bags are not big enough to be of much use....and since so many people get multiple first places, what are they supposed to do with all the bags? Doesn't make sense.
Oh, I'm going to go watch a soap. I'm just beyond disgusted.

So does anywhere say there will be no more second places or finalists? Or is it just the prizes that have changed.
I'm now wishing I had some more second prizes instead of first prize - anyone want a camera bag? LOL Just joking, I think it's more about the honor of placing amongst such great images than the prizes. Something obviously had to be done...

Awesome news from my perspective. The Premium galleries are cheap enough. I spend more than that on magazine subscriptions each year.

I noticed in the letter that Jim expressed regret "that so many great photos are overlooked each month." I hope this means we won't be seeing EFPs anymore that are technically awful and I am not talking "objectivity" which I consider a lame excuse for sloppy or hurried judging. Hopefully this will reduce the overwhelming number of entries so the judges will be able to look over the entries a little more carefully. Only the best should move up in the rounds.

Really good news!

I am pleased with the news... Even if they do take away 2nd place prizes. That just means everyone has to work harder to get that little medal under there photos :) I decided to buy a "basic" gallery because I hated only displaying 30 photos at a time and it is a great value! Not only do I enjoy my BP family but my sister lives in NYC and it's wonderful to be able to share photos of her nephews with her and not worry about them being stolen. I think the judges need this... I can't imagine the amount of photos they have to look through every month! I love BP and the contest! I think I will be sticking around for a while!

As a fee gallery member I am a bit bummed over this news and so far am finding little reason to buy a paid membership and here's why... I was an active member back in 2002 and loved it, but circumstances took me away for a few years. I started posting again last month and entered numerous photos in the contest and asked for CC. I also have been to the forums and have a list of classes I would like to take. My issues... no CC when asked and very few responses in the forums, with some responses being completely useless and even bordering rude.

I'll duck as I say this but what are the benefits of paying for a gallery when I can post photos on my blog and get more feedback and CC? Simply to enter the contest? Granted I could care less about an actual prize it's that little button below the picture I crave, and I could care less what it says, editors pick, finalist...anything would be great. But if I am going to pay then I would want to pay because I am getting something back from the community and sadly, even though there are many talented and friendly photographers here, I have been ignored.

So if anyone can give me compelling reasons why I should become a paid member I am all ears!

I don't think it is fair. I have been a member of this site for a while now and have been active in commenting and posting photos for the free contest. Granted, there were time when some of my photos didn't even get one comment, probably due to the larg amountd of images being posted. But I don't think it is fair to thoe of us that arn't able to or afford to BUY a gallery. Well I am done posting here. I will still pop in every once in a while to make a few comments.

Deana, I think one of the best ways to get CC is just to email somebody whose work you admire and ask them if they'll take a look at a photo and give you feedback. People seem to be getting busier and busier, so they might not be coming to your gallery as much, especially if you're not commenting on their photos (I don't know if you are or not). So directly asking someone may be the quicker route.

Susan M. Carter   Geez, people, grow up. This is a business. Why do you think BP owes you a free competition? Other competitions charge per photo entered, not just a $22 annual fee. No one is forcing you to use the site; if you don't think it's worth $22 a year, vote with your feet (or your mouse as it were) but stop whining.

$22 is CHEAP. You can take your spouse to a movie and pay more money. Heck, it costs more money now for five gallons of gas. For $22 a year, you can post up to 300 photos with larger thumbnails. And you can continue to enjoy watching the EP threads. :-) Most importantly, you can continue to enjoy the friendships you've made here. I think the value is well worth it!

And yet another example of the rude comments I mentioned.

I was not whining about the contest, just stating that I don't see a benefit in paying for a gallery. I also asked that if anyone can give me reasons to do so(besides the contest)then have at it. I have yet to get a response on this.

Colleen, I have actually posted a photo specifically on the CC board...nothing. I don't expect people to be looking for my gallery and understand that people are busy, but I thought that was what that particular board was for. I can't say I feel comfortable putting a specific person on the spot to cc my work, thus posting on the general CC forum in hopes that someone would simply want to seemed a better option. But thanks for the tip. :)

Danea, the only advantages of a "basic" gallery over the free one is that you get up to 300 images, and the thumbnails are larger to view.

I think the changes are fair and reasonable and feel we owe BP a "Thank You" for trying to help with the complaints they were getting from people on their site.

BUT what I'd really like to know is will there still be second place winners? Don't really care about a prize. (Let be totally honest. Is the prize what is/was your motivator?) Just the golden egg under the pictures means A LOT lot to me!!! Maybe second place will become an "Honorable Mention" as was in the cash contest. I CERTAINLY HOPE SO!!!

"I was not whining about the contest, just stating that I don't see a benefit in paying for a gallery."

The only reason I can see why anyone would pay for a gallery is if they have photos they want to share and find the site useful for gallery space. I paid for a premium gallery because BP does make an attempt to limit the unseemly people photography I wouldn't want friends stumbling upon if they chose to leave my gallery and go exploring. Not all sites give a hoot what's posted in the galleries. I don't see this as a hostage situation...either pay up or you can't enter the contest...just a side benefit to having a gallery.

Just checking in - I agree with Ann 100%. Hopefully, they'll continue posting what were winners in the past, maybe call them runners-up! She is right: it was never the prize, but the knowledge that our photos has been chosen, then subsequently featured with those Golden Eggs. If the only photos to be listed now are 1st Place winners and the Grand Prize winner, this makes winning unobtainable for most of us (or at least, way less likely than it used to be!) Truthfully, there would not be a lot of motivation left. I think MAYBE, that was the reason for the somewhat less than huge response to the Cash Contest, while it lasted. Entering a contest where you're pretty sure you have no chance of winning anyway... ? Not at all exciting, frankly. As I said, it's not the prize (to me) but the recognition of the photos. So I also hope they'll list the runners-up! "Beats nothing," as they say! Other than this, I felt the solution to their problem (in regard to the freebie galleries) was both logical and probably, inevitable. $22 for a gallery (and the quality to me, is very high) - IMO, best deal on the internet! Sure, there are free ones out there but as far as I'm concerned, the site and the people - and the contest! - are unique at BP. If the cost were $200, then I'd see a major reason for complaint. So much for my 2 cents...

Dannea, I used to try using the CC thread and gave up. Even though you and many others want honest feedback even if it's negative, too many take offense even after asking. I think many including me have become very gunshy about anything remotly negative. For that reason, if you want honest feedback, find someone with a gallery whose work you admire and send them a message asking. Most are more than happy share their thoughts if they don't fear retribution.

Just had to throw my 2 cents in. I think the changes to participating in the contest are fair. I think this site is well worth the 22$. But what saddens me is the thought that there may not be any 2nd place and finalists anymore. I know if thats the case I have absolutely no chance. I think if allot of people leave its because of that not the money. I think its always been more about the badge (and recognition) then the prize. I know I've only been doing photography for a little over a year and there is no way really to compete with professionals- or just highly experienced amateurs. The finalists were a hopeful dream for people like me- and I'm sure there are allot of people like me.

It's premature to think finalists are going away. Even before, there was never a mention of "finalists" for prizes...just GP, 1st, and 2nd. But they had finalists. And I'm sure they still will. And I bet they have 2nd place too...except you won't get a one year extension on your gallery. No need to panic just yet...

I don't see anything where it says there will be no finalists. If they remove those what would be the point? That wouldn't make sense at all. They should double or even triple the number of finalists and then maybe people wouldn't be so much missing the second places.

..and before anybody jumps on that, it used to be very common to have 900 to 1000 finalists per month and that was when there were a lot less entries.

I am glad for the change. There were so many entries that the judges were overwhelmed and rushed through the process. $22 for the first year and $19 for renewal is NOT asking a lot. It makes it so that people that are contributing financially, even if it's only a small amount, can reap the benefits of the contest. Just think of the staff that must be paid to go through ALL those entries... If this change is too much, then we will miss you. However, this is weeding out the ones that only want something for nothing.

As far as benefits of BP... There are SO MANY!! If you can't see that, then something is wrong with your perspective. The forums, the clubs, the newsletters that are full of great technical info, the comraderie among photographers. I have also found the classes very beneficial and valuable. Even if you "can't" afford a class, there is so much to learn from instructors and other members through the articles and blogs, too.

SO... if you can't appreciate the great place this is, I feel sorry for you and we'll miss ya'...

As for the 2nd place mystery... I OH SO HOPE it's not gone!!! I've never even gotten a finalist. Taking away a whoe tier like 2nd place would be detrimental!! Please leave 2nd PLACE!!! Change first place to a renewed gallery and leave 2nd as a half off coupon on a book, or even just the badge! BUT PLEASE DON'T ELIMINATE IT!! ;o) (That's me begging... LOL!)

BP is AWESOME! I have faith they will keep it valuable for their loyal patrons. (crossing fingers...)

  Dear Jim,

I feel you have come up with a great solution. I realize Better Photo is a business, that you have overhead, you have to pay people to do the judging and the workload for these dedicated people has become unmanageable.

I see that it is you intention to be able to give more attention to all the great photos that have been overlooked because of the impossible numbers.

I also realize that you have servers that hold all of these images that are submitted or just stored, and this must cost a lot.

You have an excellent webmaster who keeps this complicated site running smoothly.

Therefore, I feel that $22.00 is a low price to pay for all the services you offer on this wonderful website.

I also love your web hosting service. These sites are wonderful with more features than any can imagine.

Finally, the courses you offer are excellent and very reasonably priced.

Again, thanks Jim for having a site like this!!!
Melissa

I started out here with a free gallery and after winning a 2nd place right away, got my premium gallery. When I joined, it was because I knew several members already and because it was free. We live on a very restricted budget, and unfortunately don't have extra money for any luxuries...so getting that premium gallery was great! After the first free year I did manage to come up with the fee to continue my Premium gallery and then Murphy's law I won another free year :-)
I have met so many great people through this website, several in my area even.I now have a group of woman I shoot with regularly and I would not have met them if it weren't for BP...
As far as the one first place I won, that camera bag is a joke! My point and shoot camera won't even fit into it, but maybe I can use it as a Xmas gift to someone :-)
I don't care about the prizes so much, like Nadya and others said...it's just the fun of getting that finalist or winning 1st or 2nd place! It makes me feel good about my photography and makes me want to stick with it.
I enjoy seeing what my friends post too, and it's kind of cool feeling like I have friends all over the world!
So...I hope they keep the 2nd place, finalists etc.or there isn't alot of incentive to keep on posting ...
It won't cost them anything to give out the awards, but if they did stop, it would probably lose them alot of potential new members and make many old members lose interest...
There are so many incredibly talented photographers on this site, it is tough to even get an EFP...
So...BP, my 2 cents worth, please keep the 2nd place and finalist awards!!! Thanks for all the fun I have had here for the past 3 years :-)

Freeloader checking in;-) I have to admit that I have never paid for anything on BP. For me the fun was the challenge of trying to submit an image that was good enough to win me a free site. When I did not win, I would look at the winning photographs and see what those photographers did.

Along the way I have learned a lot from other photographers and have made some good friends. I like to think that my photography has drastically improved because of this site. So while BP has robbed me of some my fun, I think the site is worth the $22 and I will pay.

My only regret is that this might discourage new photographers from joining the site. Again, in my case, much of my development as a photographer has been from the feedback that I gotten. If I had to pay when I was first starting out, I may not have.

One another note, I would like to make a recommedation to BP. I think it would be fun to allow members to vote on each others photos and then to allow us to view the top rated photos on a daily, weekly, month, and yearly basis. Photo.net does this and I really enjoy it - and I would pay for it;-)

Sarah G   Hey, they were soooo overwhelmed with the judging of the "free contest" that they started another contest to judge. Why they ever started a new contest when they supposedly couldn't handle the one they had is beyond me. I thought it was a crazy thing to do then and since it has been suspended...

I'll be waiting until the dust settles and see what BP "looks" like then. Time will tell how all this goes down.

On balance, I feel the new changes will improve BP in the long run. Clearly the quality of judging has gone down the past year, with many good photographers and photos being overlooked, as Jim mentioned in his announcement of the changes. Yes, it is now going to cost folks to enter the "free contest." I hope that doesn't discourage people from becoming a member of BP. However, the price is very reasonable considering what it cost at most other photo websites that don't even offer a contest. I think a change was necessary, and I for one am going to stick by BP. Now, I only hope I start getting some finalists again; it has been a long dry spell for me (LOL)!!

I'm excited about the new look to the basic/premium (take your pick) gallery...but I can't get mine to work, so I switched back to the classic view until they can hopefully let me know what's up. I set up my first album, but when I click View Gallery I just get the error page. Bummer, I'm anxious to get it all set up!

Erin Appelbaum   Deb, I'm with you. Got the error message when I tried to view it. I think the the new look is great. I use this site to send people to to view my stuff. I looks a whole lot more professional. I am also a bit upset about losing the second place prize, though I'm good 'til 2016. Most of us already have camera bags I'm assuming. Oh well. If anyone gets their new gallery up and running let us know how you do it.

I think BP is on the right track with trying to eliminate contest entries from non paying members, in an attempt to cut back on just how many entries are entered every month. I have read the price is now 49.00 per year and then 39.00 for renewals. The new galleries also allow for up to 1000 displayed shots. These prices are still a hell of a deal!! Also it will greatly weed out images from some free gallery members, that just should not be there for obvious reasons. That said there are free gallery members that need to subscribe right now, cause your work is amazing, and it needs to be in the contests. I think this change will really take BP to the next level for serious photographers, and STILL be a place where others can learn and move up. I started with a free gallery, moved up into a premium gallery, and then last year I purchased my Pro site. You start from the bottom and you move up, you make great friends along the way and most importantly you learn from some of the best BP has to offer here. The only thing I could suggest Jim, is perhaps another look at the prize structure, I'm not sure what to suggest but I think it could be done better. Personally I am happy with the recognition that comes along with a Finalist/Win but as someone has pointed out if you get too many 1st place wins you end up with a few camera bags?? I do like the gallery subscriptions for winning 2nd place!!... Grand prize Deluxe/Pro website is nice too. let's work on the 1st place prize is the only suggestion I can make to you... Thanks

okay, had to put my thoughts out there...
i'm a freeloader too and had actually been thinking about buying a gallery here. I had silly hopes that I might win one when I first found this site. I can understand the changing of the contest but I really have a problem with there not being a lot of notice to the change (i wouldn't have known at all, if I hadn't looked in on this forum) and with the big jump in price. yes, the gallery was a bargain at 22$ but I really don't know that I can afford 50$. it would have been nice of them to give a little more notice for all of this.

i don't know if i'm going to stay or go

oh- I did like the guy's suggestion for letting other's vote on photo's. I thought that was a really good idea.

I totally agree with you Jodi, that more notice, or any notice should have been given to current free members to jump aboard at the 22 dollar price before the change went into effect. I am not a fan of members voting on other peoples shots for winner purposes though, as I feel it would turn into a popularity contest, instead of a photo contest. Impartial voting based upon a set of photographic criteria is the only way to judge Photography in my opinion...

no- I wouldn't want people to vote for winning purposes but just something to offer in addition to the real contest. just to see what catches people's eye. but then, maybe I assume too much thinking that people would consider more than just voting for someone they know :-)

With the new changes to the premium, I wonder what they'll do with the Pro Galleries. It would be nice if they make a gallery page similar to the current one available so that fellow BPers can see recent entries to your gallery and any badges awarded at a glance. As for the rest, BP has never been good about warning in advance of changes. We all know this. If Jim and crew are really reading this, I hope they take some advice and start testing new features with a core group of 100 members or so (of all gallery levels) to avoid embarrassments like the current one of making changes, hiking up the price and then the new style doesn't work. I don't know why, but I didn't get an email like everyone else. I read about it from my off-board group. Is that because I have a Pro Gallery? I also have a Premium Gallery.

  Hello Derek,

I will agree with you, it is better to have impartial judges deciding who are the winners of each month contest. However, one critism I have with BP is that the gallerys are sorted by date only. By allowing people to score photos, images can then be resorted so that people can see the top ranked images on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, etc. basis.

The reason why I mentioned this is that I would be interested in knowing which images are making an impression with other photographers.

I like the idea of a member scoring system, but having been involved with this on another site, it has some problems too. It becomes a numbers game. Some people will invarably score incredible shots low in order to move them lower in the standings with the hopes that their own shots will stay higher. Others will score Aunt Fanny's Foot Surgery Photo with a perfect score because, well, they LOVE Aunt Fanny and don't want to hurt her feelings. Still others start "trading" scores... I'll give you a 10 if you give me one... Then you have those who have barely mediocre shots who will say that everything is fixed because they can't get anyone to give them a high score. It's a nice concept though, and can have some positive aspects. More honest critiquing in some cases. More involvement from particpants, etc.

Jennifer Rennison   I think the new options/look of the galleries is a great new feature and will be a nice way to showcase our work! I also don't think the increase in price is that much, about $4/month, that is a cup of coffee at Starbucks! Personally I don't like the idea of members voting on the photos that turns into a popularity contest and many people like to enter but don't have the time to comment, which I feel in turn would turn into you made a comment and voted for me now I need to do the same type thing. Just my 2 cents!

Thanks Jim for the update. I think it's very fair. Honestly - when I started here - there were no free galleries. You could enter the contest - but you didn't have a free gallery of 30 pics to show your stuff off in... That came later... And I think things have grown too big and I think only BP supporters should have access to the "free" contest. I still believe it's free because you don't have to pay to enter it. Shutterbugs.biz just did something similar. You can win POTD but you can't go any further unless you've donated money to them. And it's just a donation - you don't get anything in return - whereas for the price of a premium gallery you get great space to show off your pics.
I truly HATE the idea of people's choice for the contest. If who decides the winners becomes popular vote I will definitely never enter again. There is enough of that going on in yahoo groups etc. and it shouldn't be a popularity contest - it should be judged by qualified judges! PERIOD!
I didn't get an e-mail - but I see it's in this week's snapshot - which is a reasonable way of telling people I guess... I just rarely get around to reading it!

I think this is very fair, I too started with a free gallery but it didn't take me long to get addicted to this site. I have learned alot, I have contacted members via email and have learned great tips for CS3, exposure questions, etc. I will admit I am addicted to the EFP's and I have won a few finialist that I was thrilled about. I do tease my husband he pays over $22 for a carton of cigarettes a WEEK that will one day kill him and my habit has only cost us $22 a YEAR and isn't bad for my health at all!!!! (with the exception of the dry spell of EFP's I haven't been getting....that does have my blood pressure up a bit!!!) Just kidding, Jim I love the site and will continue to support all the BP team! And thanks all the members that have been so supportive of me.

When someone gets the new look installed and fully functional, could you please tell us about it? Can you display your EP, Finalist and Winner badges? Can you see which of your images are "favorites" without going to a special place to do that? Is the sort/organizational system user friendly? etc.
Thanks.

One thing I have noticed with the new sites is that the EFP's are no longer tagged below the shot's?? Not sure about the finalist or winning shots can't get that far to see without it locking up at the moment. Hopefully that is not the new format... :(

For a split second, I was able to convert to one of the new layouts. None of the buttons showed up, including finalists or gold medals...only the thumbnail. Unclear is this is related to the glitch, or the new layout. I didn't see an option to turn on/off the buttons. Maybe they're all turned off in the new layouts...although that doesn't make sense...

It is not my intent to start an arguement - but for some dumb reason I feel obliged to clarify myself.

Again, I think the BP judges should be the ones deciding who are the monthly contest winners. A popularity contest is dumb for the reasons mentioned above.

However, I am interested in finding out which photos are striking a cord with other photographers - not just the monthly winners. By allowing people to rank photos, you can then sort to see which images are getting the highest ranking (again, not a contest). Photo.net does this and they do not seem to have the problems mentioned above.

In addition, I rarely have an opportunity to view all the photos posted on a daily basis (although that may change now). One critism I have with this site is that the gallerys are sorted by date only. By allowing people to rank photos, and by allowing people to search the top ranked photos - it will easier to see the "better photos" this site has to offer.

Yeah I am sure there will be some people who will post bad images and get their immediate family to give them good ratings - but what are we talking about - 5 votes per image? Remember the cream always floats to the top - and so will the best photos.

Again, the monthly contest should be run by impartial judges. However, by allowing a ranking system, I think it will allow us to see the best photos this site has to offer - without having to go through every image that has been posted.

Okay, I will get off soap box.

Sincerely,

Reformed Freeloader

I managed to get to a page with my finalist and my second place win. No button. I'm sure they'll get it worked out soon.

Sarah G   Well, I knew more was going to happen then just shutting out of the contest the ones who have free galleries. I just wondered how much more it was going to cost everyone.

MORE than doubling the cost of a gallery is interesting. Just because you get "more" for your doubled price doesn't mean you're really getting anything for the extra money.

Everyone can now enjoy spending more money.

wow...what a shock...but I understand the new rule of buying a gallery in order to enter the contest...I won a 2nd place in the past and had a free premium gallery for a year....after it expired I was unable to renew so went back to the free gallery...I've been wanting to upgrade again but it has to be the spare money to do so and it's just hasn't been there ..I was just trying to upgrade this summer for the $22 and now it's $49? I'm sorry but that doesn't come easy for me...I would figure out the $22 at this point somehow....the jump in price is just depressing...I was sitting down to enter a photo tonight when I saw the thread... I was going to go talk to my husband about going ahead on the $22 ...then I kept reading and realized that the price jumped to $49 sometime today....I cannot even bring that amount up to him at this time...I don't mean to sound like a whiner or want sympathy but we as I'm sure others have a lot of medical bills on top of everything else...this contest was my escape away from the stress.....I'm sorry I'm just a little shocked at the moment...I do understand the fact of the fee for the gallery and entering the contest but I think they should have kept it at $22 and kept it like it was...then if they wanted to upgrade the gallery give us an option for the better one at the $49 or the basic(premium) like it was for $22.
I've been a part of betterphoto for over three years and truly love this site...I wish they would have given members and past premium gallerys some kind of notice or the option to buy at $22 for a limited time...??

I sat here to enter a photo...for that few minutes of me time and the hopes of getting some recognition...guess I won't be doing that now until I can figure out how to come up with the $49 and I honestly don't know when that will be....how depressing...
my photos aren't that great but I loved the thrill of the contest...I feel like this is just one more thing going wrong and my bubble has been bursted...

sorry to whine again... I'm just tired...going to bed........

I think it is a move in the right direction and a fair one. I hope it makes the process of photo selection much better than what it was. From the distance I have always marveled at the patience and the tenacity of the BP team to continue to support such mind boggling nos. of contest entries and continuing with the job month after month, however their struggle to keep up with this seemingly impossible task also has seen many wonderful entries being overlooked time and again, I sincerely hope that frequency of such undesired incidents go down with this change in place.

Tori, thanks for sharing the flip-side of the money issue...most of us take the money for granted...but there are some, like you, where the $49 is cost-prohibitive. I like your idea...$22 for the basic, and the $49 for the "enhanced."

I used to have a free gallery, too, for about 4 months when I first joined BP. Then it became too hard to decide which 30 photos I could display, so I paid for the upgrade. Now I have 2 free years from 2nd place wins, so I am ok for awhile longer. I understand how BP figured that the entries would go down if free gallery owners were not allowed to enter the contest. If I still had a free gallery, I would definitely upgrade to enter the contest at $22. However, with the economy the way it is, I can definitely see how the new price will make it much harder for some. At this point, if I had to pay the $49 to upgrade from a free gallery, I would not be able to afford it (at this time at least). I sub teach and tutor right now and of course, that means no work for the summer. When the name for the premium gallery was changed to basic, it was my guess that BP would offer a new premium gallery with more bells and whistles for a higher price, something in between the basic at $22 and the deluxe at $199. I thought that would be nice. One thing that I find a bit disappointing is that my son has a free gallery and can no longer enter the contest. He doesn't post or enter often, but at times he becomes interested again, and he was so proud when he won a finalist. (He is 12.) I told him today that he could no longer enter the contest, but he said he might use some of his birthday money to pay half of the $22, and I thought about paying the rest. But now he can't afford half of $49. I have heard there are quite a few kids that use the site, and I hate to see them locked out of the contest, as I doubt that they enter enough to add much to the total entries (at least my son doesn't). I suppose I could add an album in my gallery for him, but then only one of us can enter the contest for a given night. Lately I have been entering a lot less, so maybe that will work out.

I think that finalists and 2nd place will still be recongnized but just no prizes awarded for 2nd place. I can understand that, even when it was $22 for a gallery (I did the math with how much a free (premium/basic) gallery was costing them to give as 2nd place prizes while it was still $22). I will be happy with the gold badge, prize or not. :)

I KINDA like the new gallery look, BUT they will have to incrase the image thumbnail size and give back my winner buttons before I use the new layout.

Like Susan and others here, I'm good until 2024.

I just saw these new Gallery don't saw your EP's. Is there any way to get them to show?? I wonder if this means they will stop giving them since they want us to use the new Galleries and they don't display. Now I'm sad about the changes too. I just started getting them.

I'm a bit surprised at the new raised price for the basic gallery too. The new gallery looks slick and $49 might be worth for the new limited number of photos. But for the price we pay, I'm not sure if I like the way the headline "Basic Gallery" sounds.

I agree with Ken and Les. $22 option should remain as the "Basic" and $49 should be for new "Premium" or "Enhanced". And in the new gallery layout, I'd like to see thumbnails not squeezed and EFP and winning budges with images as before.

Jennifer Ralston   I have to say, I am really depressed reading this news. I have been poking around BP for about 4 years now. I really enjoy entering pics into the monthly theme and looking at everyone's photography.

I cannot justify $49/year for the Basic. A big problem is I already pay $149/yr for my SmugMug website. I do not need two websites.

I wouldn't mind paying a fee to keep my 30 photos up and enter contests. I have no use for the ability to keep more than that. However, I personally wouldn't be willing to pay more than $15/yr for it.

I really would hate to leave, but unless something gives, it looks like I will have to :o(

I was able to see my new gallery this morning, but after seeing it, I've switched back to Classic -- at least for now.

No badges are visible -- no EP's, finalists or winners. Also, the thumbnails are really tiny and the images are 'scrunched' and distorted in the them.

You cannot resort the order of your photos -- once you add them to a category album, that's the way they stay. I had picked one image as the cover of my car album because it's my favorite, and it was a finalist. When I realized that picking an image as the cover of an album does not actually put it IN the album, I then added it -- but it went to the end of the album and I could not move it. Also, you have to search for images one at a time to add them to a category album, you cannot select multiple images. This will be a major project, if I decide to use the format at all.

It's the "New Coke" saga all over again. Making a major product change without serious test marketing is the biggest mistake a small company (or a large one) can make. Especially in a case where you don't do a gradual phase out of the old to the new. I think BP would be wise to hire a savy marketing expert. Rather than listening to a "select" few, it would been far better to get a broader range of responses to their survey and not rush putting out the new features. They have some great ideas going and eventually, I'm sure that it will all work out...

I don't like the idea of not seeing the badges, I just have 3 finalists and don't want to lose them.

My three daughters have free gallery, and they don't enter in the contest every day, but they love this plase, I haven't told them that no longer enter in the contest, I was thinking of give them a gallery in my site but with the lose of badges I don't think they will like it, having EFP is HUGE for them.

Yes Elida, I hate it for the kids. I just have the one, but with more kids, it would be costly to give them all their own gallery now. Of course, if they don't enter regularly, maybe they could share one.
So far from what I see, I like the new look, except for the thumbnails being square which does distort them. If a person looks at your gallery and doesn't know this, I don't know if they would choose to click on a thumbnail that looks distorted. I doubt I would.
As far as the badges, I think everyone is getting too upset over this. I am sure they will be displayed once the kinks are worked out. I mean, what would be the point of BP giving badges if they didn't have a way for them to be seen? I would like the option of turning off just the EFPs though. I don't know yet if given the choice I would display or keep mine, but I know many who would like the ability to turn those off.
And I just thought of a new problem. I know of some people that have a deluxe gallery but still pay for a basic. I don't like what I have seen with the deluxe galleries in the way you have to comment and the fact that I can't see others' comments or the way you have to view their images one by one or in a slideshow. At least that has been my experience with the deluxe ones, although maybe owners of them can shed more light on this. But I bet many of the owners of the deluxe sites will not want to keep a basic gallery with the increase in price, so BP could lose money. I would have loved to have ssen the basic stay as it was at $22, and then add a premium for the new price. Then the kids and deluxe owners could still have a more affordable option, not to mention those who have had a free gallery and truly can't afford to upgrade to the new price.

I do think $49 will prevent a fair number of people from buying a basic gallery. Especially when it's called "basic." I'm glad BP IS still offering a free gallery, at least, even if those folks can't enter the contest.

I don't mind the square thumbnails; they're like that on the websites. But the badges should show, and I hope BP is working on that. I just tried to access my gallery and got the little red message about technical problems.

I do think that people will be discouraged from buying a deluxe website if they have to pay $49 for their basic gallery. The website isn't cheap (although cheaper than many others out there) and for me, it was quite a pinch to do it. If I had to pay for my "basic" gallery at the same time, I wouldn't have bought the deluxe.

I don't mind the extra cost for all we get from the site it is worth it...but what I do not like is the fact all the EFP and winner badges now don't show, not just in our gallery, but it is also good to check on others and see what makes a shot a winner. I will be sticking with the old version at least for now!

I notice that when I click member center under "welcome, my name" it goes to the member center as it always did. Then if I click on basic gallery on the far right, a new page will open and it takes me to my new set up, but if I click under gallery images on the left where you can click to upload or edit your photos, it goes to my gallery in classic view (and it doesn't open a new window). I don't like the fact that there are no buttons on the new view that take you back to your member center or to the contest or home or wherever (like in classic view when I am looking at the first page of my gallery, at the top left hand side I can click on home, contest, courses, reviews, or sign in. If they don't add that at the top of the new view, than I guess you have to keep the member center window open to access the other parts of BP that you want to visit. I think I would like buttons to click on to go to other BP pages in this new set up. Ok, now I see in the new set up that I can click on Betterphoto.com and go to their homepage.

Bingo! I didn't see the survery so I shouldn't comment but that's not going to stop me. IF I had taken the survey and IF it had asked how much I was willing to spend on a gallery I would have said not more than it is now. I just display all my photos at Shutterstock.com and make money from them ;). Beats the heck out of paying to display them :o).

Tori, I feel for you! We've been slammed two years in a row with thousands of dollars in medical bills. I could scrape up the money for a gallery, but can not justify the cost. A BP gallery is only for fun and unfortunately sometimes fun has to take a back seat to reality :(. I hope things improve soon and you can have your gallery another year.

There seem to be quite a few "glitches" with the new set-up that I'm sure they're working on. I just noticed the square thumbnails distort the images, unlike the square thumbnails on the Deluxe sites, which just cut off a portion of the image.

I don't mean to just complain about all the things that are "wrong" but am hoping BP staff will read this thread and see the issues that need to be addressed. That way we won't be inundating them with separate emails about each one.

I did get the survey and there was no mention of a higher price. Mainly they asked me what I would do if....there was no free contest...and I said I would be "out of there!!" There were several questions involving the contest and I did not like any of their suggestions...so my answer was the "otta there" option. I am keeping the old gallery given that I do have a website. BTW...my website does display the EFP, Finalists and Winners and nothing is distorted in the enlarged format. Yes the thumbnails are smaller..much smaller and somewhat square, but all someone has to do is click and they get the correctly sized image. Also there is the option of a slide show. Given that they got the websites right, I cannot see why they are having a problem with the new format galleries that seem to be like the websites. I agree with everyone who said a product should not be released until it is tested!!!

I normally do not chime into these things, but I do want to mention that I think the BP is defiantly going down the right road. I love the new choices and album options for only $49.00! When you think about it that’s a great deal!! I have looked into upgrading to a Deluxe gallery and I felt that was a bit too expensive for me. I think this new Basic gallery resembles the Deluxe gallery but for a lot less.

Thanks BetterPhoto!

Sarah G   I remember when everyone said that the name of the galleries had changed AND when some of you started to talk of the survey. Considering how fast everything rolled out, they used the survey to LOOK like they cared what people thought.

It was already going down and they did NOT have enough time to really look at those survey's and come to any real conclusions concerning the answers BEFORE they did their changes.

We all now know what was really happening for the two weeks that no EFP's rolled out.

I guess I am just still stuck on ... if I am going to continue my membership I would like to know the specifics on how the contest will work.!!! Is anyone 100% sure on Ep's, 2nd place winners, cash contest, ect????

I think they did what they had to do. Look at the first half of the year... Look at ALL the complaints about the free contest and all the overlooked images. Although in the survey they did not mention raising the price of the BASIC gallery, I do beleive they looked them over. Why do I think that??? There was a question that I responded to that I got a personal response to in my e-mail a couple weeks after I turned in the survey. And in response to that e-mail, I mentioned how sad I would be if EPs were a thing of the past because they help me get a clue if I'm even heading in the right direction... as I've never even gotten a finalist or win. Jim e-mailed me back and assured me that they were working on some things and the EPs would be coming again shortly. They probably had so many suggestions and complaints... They're doing what they can to be the most beneficial to the site as a whole. (My 2 cents) ;o)

I think the contest being open only to paid subscribers is fair, and that $22.00 or $49.00 is a reasonable price for the a Basic or Premium gallery. However, I'd like to stick with my Classic version, until some of the glitches get worked out with the new version. What happened to the emblems in the new version?

Deb, how did you get an album set up? I don't see anywhere the option for albums! Not sure I will like the fact you can't move them around though, and what image will be displayed on the cover? The first image you put in? Adding them one at a time sounds time-consuming too. I wonder if that is a glitch or will be changed?

I have Pro Gallery now ($299 to renew), or I can go down to a Deluxe Gallery ($169 at renewal), but there's not enough difference between a Basic and Deluxe to warrant the extra $120 for me. When I signed up, I was able to make payments. Now, it doesn't look like that option will be available anymore. I don't think I'll be paying that $299 to keep my Pro Site. I'll just go with the Basic, and pay somewhere else to host my web site. I would have thought that those of us who pay for a pro site would be included in some of the surveys, etc. Guess not.

Carol -- go to My Member Center, then click on the Basic BetterPholio button along the top. There you will see a button to choose Classic or New Version. Once you choose New Version, you will see the links to set up albums. Once there, you just follow the prompts to choose your page layout, your color scheme, create albums, choose album covers, and add photos to each album. It's pretty self explanatory once you get there -- the first step is choosing New Version, then you will see all the rest of the choices.

My three cents worth: with regard to the members pick idea above....I always thought that's what the FAVORITES section of the site was about....as far as Favorite photo; although it is not updated or "ranked" by month---which I guess could be done.

As far as the old prize structure went, I am reminded of an old joke about the Denver Nuggets, when they were an absolutely horrible team, that no one wanted to watch: 1st Prize (in some contest) would be 2 tickets to a Nuggets game; 2nd Prize would be 4 tickets. ;-)

Meaning, even though I was always aiming for the top honor in the contest, I always wanted the 2nd Place prize (a PremiuM Gallery for a year), rather than the sling pack for a 1st Place Win---(if I couldn't get the GP Winner).

Even without a "prize", I hope they still "award" a goodly amount of 2nd Place winners (and Finalists) in each contest, or else only 11 photos--out of tens of thousands of entries--will receive any sort of "public" recognition each month. Not very good odds.

" I think they did what they had to do. Look at the first half of the year... Look at ALL the complaints about the free contest and all the overlooked images."

I understand that BP is a business and they felt something had to change in order to stay in business. All the changes mentioned so far are the new sites and and the new cost that will be associated with the changes.

I haven't seen or heard how any of this will address the complaints and problems of the free contest. Is it the feeling of BP that there will be a lot less images entered but the extra cost will more then make up for the difference. Or will more people to hired to handle the workload?

I see that every month there are an average of over 30,000 images entered into the free contest.Someone somewhere the other day listed the total of free galleries to paid member's galleries . Taking into consideration that the protential alone for just the paying members is over 100,000 images each month should everyone enter very day.I can't for a moment see how any of the changes address the complaints and concerns that are already there.

One could argue that they never have that many images anyways. But the protential is always there. The total stated for free galleries was over 10,000. Should just 10% of the people pony up and pay for the "Basic" membership that give the possibility of another 30-40,000 images in the contest each month for paid members. I'm sure if people have to pay to enter the contest , they are going to make sure they get their money's worth.

I don't know what will happen with the new changes, but Sharon D and Gregory are going to be very busy ;o).

Yea, I agree ... these changes have nothing to do with "fixing problems" with the contest. Nor does it have anything to do with reducing submissions ... participation has been steadly declining from 40+K late last year to 30K this last month.

This is about a need for a quick infusion of cash... BP is betting that many will convert from free to basic galleries this month. For some reason, BP needs cash and they need it now. And they are willing to take a gamble to get it.

It will probably work... in the VERY short run. The open question is: what will it do to future increases in subscriber base? Time will tell.

I have a free gallery and have entered the contest just a few times. I was thinking of spending the $22 to get the new gallery, but not so sure I want to take a chance on $49. I know..it's not alot, but it is for me. I agree with others...why can't we get the classic gallery for $22, and then later on, upgrade to the super-charged one for $49?

This is very saddening for me. I haven't been a member here for long. I just happened to stumble upon this site by doing a search one day.
After I read this I was going to go start a new membership for the $22.00 price but when I saw $49.00 I decided not to.
I will really miss entering the contest here :(
I agree with a lot of you, we should have been given more of a warning that changes were coming, especially with the price change.

From David " It will probably work... in the VERY short run. The open question is: what will it do to future increases in subscriber base? Time will tell."

Before I read Alexander's new thread about how active the different level of members are I probably would of agreed with this.

It appears that with over 11000 free memberships only 197 of them have been active in the last week.

So it seems that people from the free galleries make up a very small portion of the images entered each month.

So not only are the totals down from the contest but its the paying members that are not entering. With the new prices for galleries it will be interesting to see who stays and who goes.

Stay tuned !!!

OK, my 2 cents... After reading this entire thread this morning and tagging a few others, it's clear that time will answer all of our questions and fix the new problems with the galleries. But the one thing that I want to say is that this site offers everything that people are concerned about. The "favorites" are BP's way of allowing the members to "vote" on their favorite photos. We can also track our favorite photographers. There are threads for every imaginable topic as well as clubs. In fact that may be one of the problems... there is SO much here that members do not have the time to use all of it. I would love more constructive critique without having to ask individuals but there are so many on that thread that no one responds. I don't have many answers to everyone's problems here but I am very satisfied with what BP has to offer and I feel compassionate for all of the work they have to do. It's impossible to keep everyone happy but I know BP is very valuable to me for many reasons and I am willing to be patient while they work on their problems and if I can help in any way I am willing. I just bought my "Basic" gallery (fortunately before the price increase) and feel it is worth every penny. I hope to contribute in every possible way that I can. I thank everyone of you that have taken the time to participate. You are the reason why this site is as great as it is.

For those of you that were concerned about our winning emblems not appearing on the new basic version. Just giving you all a heads up that they are now appearing under the photo :)

It's just a matter of time, & Betterphoto will have all the bugs worked out :)

I'm wondering if they changed Premium to Basic so they could start a new gallery priced somewhere between Basic and Deluxe and then use the name Premium for it. That's what I think might happen. Quess we'll have to wait and see.

Glad to hear the emblems are showing up now.

I am happy to see the emblems are back....my only complaint is that you have to scroll a bit as they are on the bottom. It would be nice to have them on the side so when you open a photo it is right there. (Just a nit)

The badges are showing up AFTER you click on the large thumbnail, and the winners/finalists are showing up with an EFP under them too. Maybe that is because they will be giving us the option of turning them off, maybe?? I would like for the finalist/winner badges to how up under the bigger thumbnails (where you have the 8 larger thumbnails and the page numbers). That way each month after finalists/winners are announced, you can go to your friends' galleries and see if they have any new finalist/winners w/o having to click on each photo to see. That would be a pain to do!

I have a free gallery, and I submit to the free contest. I'm only starting my second year in business, and don't have funds to throw around. I have been pretty fortunate finding free resources online, and utilizing public library resources and such. When I first read this, I was on the fence about the $22, since I've never paid for a forum, and $50 is just way too much. I don't even make that on some clients (which I have very little of since I'm a new business).

It's very sad that they are taking away the free resource for those who are beginning in photography and don't have the funds to invest in everything under the sun photography related, but are dedicated to learning and developing our craft.

I never did win, but I have several finalists in my gallery if anyone wants to take a look before I say goodbye as a contributer.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my photography.

I've noticed some members have already switched to the new "Basic Gallery". But the new gallery is a little confusing to me. What is the distinction between "All Photos" and "My Gallery" buttons? Is there a "Biography" button? And how do I leave a comment?

Please forgive me, if somebody has asked the same questions already.

Hi Alex,

I'm switching back an forth between the classic view and new version. I set up galleries for the new version.

All Photos: displays the photos that you currently marked to display in your gallery. The display will in in new format/layout.

My Gallery: I do not have this button, but there is the header "My Albums". Under this header, there will be the list of galleries you create. Each gallery is clickable.

Biography: You mean Bio/About? There is "About Me" on the top of the screen. But there is currently no "Gallery Text", which I miss. I hope BP will restore "Gallery Text" in the new version.

Comment: Currently there is no button to enter discussion in the New Gallery layout. You will have to use other ways to enter comment. This ought to be also restored in the new version IMO.

I just remembered,.. before I created albums (I said galleries above but it's a wrong terminology), there was a "My Gallery" button you refer. And darn thing I do not remember what it was for other than I think it did the same thing as the other...

Great Nobi-One, I was looking at your "New Gallery" before you replied. I must have read your mind while you were reading my comment :) I like your selection of the color scheme and over all design. It proves your good taste.

I compared your new gallery and others and found there are differences. Your gallery has "About Me" while another one doesn't.

And I noticed you added more photos in each album. They are great collections. Very impressive.

I just hope BP will add a function for comments which everybody can see.

Anna is correct, "BIO" has to be enabled if you wish it. Same for "Contact" button to show in your gallery.

Sort order: is not yet enabled or implemented. So, currently the photo order in "All Photos" is in chronological order of photo upload time. In albums, photos are placed as you add them.
Sort tool is needed for "All Photos" and "Albums" IMO.

Albums: You may add/remove any photos from your uploaded photos. You may also add the same photo to different albums.

Commenting: As said above. For right now, you can still comment on photos from the "Recent Entries" pages, and/or if you are member of a club or clubs, you can comment from the club homepage gallery.

Seems to me the whiners got what they wanted. Less people to enter the contests, they should be happy until their "wins" run out and they have to pay to enter for a larger gallery.
I think there will be too many entries for the judges to get around too and less wins anyways, the whiners will always find something to complain about no matter what.
I can get a gallery anywhere, so what is my incentive to do that here? It's not a matter of the money.Even though the price went up and is not what everyone is saying on this thread.
Plenty of free galleries and contests out on the internet. I liked this site for the friendships I made and the great photographers who photo's we could share with each other. I actually never looked past the first page in anyone's gallery. I will keep the freebie gallery to share my photo's with friends so what if I can't enter a contest. :) Have a happy 4th all..
I do think they should of let
everyone know about the changes ahead of time instead of waking up without a contest button. (Shaking head) Tsk-tsk BP for that surprise!

Good point you made Peaches. Why should people who have won bigger galleries and not paid anything in still get to enter in the contests? If it's about money now and taking away from the free galleries, well wins are free galleries. Take away from them also and just let the people who buy galleries/web pages/ and classes just enter the contests. Seems fair to me.

Nancy I have read your "Thought's" and I do think you have some good points. As someone that never cared about blacklisted or blackballed if such a thing even exist , I have always spoken my mind. It's nice to know that they are other people here that feel the same way.

I have backed the idea of keeping the contest open to free member sites from the beginning. As some one that has a premium gallery , paid for a deluxe gallery , has taken an online class I do believe it is unfair that they should be able to still enter the contest if they switch to a free gallery when their "Basic" gallery expires. I'm sure if enought people do that , thats exactly what will happen , the contest will be only open to paying members.

On the other hand regardless of how anyone feels about the winners that have won galleries for the future. The fact of the matter is that they earned them and should not be penalized because Betterphoto changed the format for galleries and the contest.Just so you understand I have never won a free premium gallery , I just believe fair is fair.

My suggestion is that all the people that believe this is unfair ,write a e-mail to Jim expressing your concerns either personally or collectively and see if there can be a change in policy.

Betterphoto is a business and I'm sure a lot of thought went into the changes before hand. Pointing fingers at the people that earned their "Basic" , "Premium" or whatever one wants to call the new galleries isn't the answer.

BP doesn't have to be fair. Or fair as you define it. All they have to do is make decisions that they think are beneficial to their business.

If you have constructive suggestions to make, I'm sure they'll read them. But complaining about BP members who've won galleries is hardly helpful.

This is true, But there is so much competition for online photo sites , how beneficial will it be if people switch . There are many excellent sites out there with more and more of them opening every day.

Businesses and online sites belly up everyday. They are no guarantees out there. Especially with the economy what it is today.

Like the late great Harry Cohn head of Columbia Pictures used to always say: "If you give the public what they want, they'll always show up"

Speaking as someone who has paid for the pro galllery, I had to put in my two cents. Those who won basic (used to be premium) galleries basically won the monetary value of the prize. In other words, they won $22 (at that time) that could only be used to purchase the premium gallery. If someone gave you a gift certificate for a restaurant, you used it, and then the restaurant changed their policies and upped the price of the sushi, they aren't going to tell you you have to return the sushi you already ate or give them more money for it. Good business just doesn't work that way. Of course most good service oriented businesses don't change pricing or remove services without warning. I'd hate to wake up one day with no electricity because the power company decided they were only going to let those people who live in apartments or condos have power on weekends and didn't tell us about it.

Ross's comment is refreshingly positive among so many negative things said about the new version lately.

Granted there are still some missing options/functionalities, the new version is great. It has the professional website look and layout.

Three different layout/color options and albums are just two of the things, in my opinion, really make the gallery great for any photographers, amateur to pro-minded.

I, too, have my own list of basic/must-have functionalities I wish fixed, worked on, or implemented. I should send it off to BP when I get around to it. But I'm sure they are getting quite a few of them already.

When I first said this was a good move (limiting contest entries) that was when the basic gallery price was $22. The price increase wasn't announced until later.

I'm not sure why BP didn't come up with some sort of compromise. Keep the $22 BASIC gallery so people can upgrade to enter the contest. Or if it needs to be a bit more then raise that to $25.

And then the $39/$49 new "Premium" gallery would be an optional upgrade for everyone.

Most people can get $25 dollars together for the basic, but pulling together $50 gets harder.

  LOL.. You are funny Diana...

As someone who has a few years of gallery paid for.. I do see the aggravation here for free gallery members... I for one would of liked more warning too.. Free gallery or not.. The July 1st surprise was just that.. A SURPRISE... And I agree, more warning would have given members that WANT to pay for the right to enter a chance to save it... A message in the month of June sometime would of been nice... It didn't effect my ability to enter in July... But waking up to no ENTER button would of made me mad too.. So I do see your point...

I myself am not Gun ho on the new gallery... Still has some issues I think.. And till they are worked out, I will keep my classic version..:)

As far as members who have won our free galleries... I actually see your point... The value of our free gallery at the time was 22.00... Now the price is 39.00 (I HAVE purchased 2 of them) when I joined BP before I won.. So my renewal fee will be 39.00 I hope... I can see members saying why doesn't the ones who won, have to pay the difference between the 22.oo and the 39.00? And I guess that's up to BP... We will see... If they see it as a good business decision they might decide to make us pay... And I will pay!

I still think the $$$ amount is fair.. I always thought 22.00 a year was quite low for what we got... And I AM NOT SOMEONE WITH MONEY!! My husband is on disability and I am a stay at home mom... I to this day have NOT found the money to upgrade to a DSLR.. Ask many members...LOL.. I want to but the funds are never there... But I find a way when it's important to me... Even if you save a couple bucks back a month till renewal... If it's important.. You will find a way.. Smokers find the $$ for their cigarettes.. BP is my addiction...lol I will buy it..:) And I hope you guys do too!!

Just my 2 cents...:)

SP ~ 25.00 toward a BP course or bookstore purchase.. Encourage members to spend MORE money with them..:) Makes sence..:)

Sarah G   It was rather rude to log in and find things were not as they had been the day before. However, free is free and what do they owe those who have free galleries? Nothing. At least they didn't delete them and we can still use them...wonder when that will change?

When I read the changes about the contest, I wondered when the price would go up. I was NOT surprised to see it happen, I KNEW it was just around the corner. (They had changed the name of the gallery to "Basic" and that was the biggest clue.)

This is pretty much really about updating the looks and being able to improve money flow. Everyone knows that if a business remains stagnant it will eventually die.

Kara,

Your prize suggestions are MUCH MORE APPEALING. If I don't want the prize, why pay for the "privilege to play." Even if I had a chance of winning something (my photography skills still need much work), I don't want the bag and would NOT accept it. So...what's the incentive to join and "play?"

Maybe 49 bucks is easy pickins for some but I pay over 200 a month to keep my diabetic kitty alive and that's just the beginning of my monthly expenses. Here is what I wrote to BP :

Hi BP staff.

I know I am just one of hundreds of voices you are hearing this week but I am very disappointed with you and needed to voice my opinion. I do not think it was right that free gallery folks can no longer enter the contest.

I am a beginner and getting EP's was helping me decide if I was even good enough to join or take classes.

I started this club in January with no confidence and now I realize that I do have imagination and talent and an eye and that my love for photography is more than just a hobby. Before January I was just the person in the family that seemed to take way too many pictures. That was all I was. NOW I am growing and love this site so much. Entering the contest meant so very much.

At 22 dollars I would have soon joined. But at almost 50 dollars that was quite a jump!

I realize you have costs and needs etc...but I just am devastated that I can't even enter my little photos anymore.

I belong to some side clubs at BP and intend to stay but am just very disappointed that I was just cut right off. I know others are too and several people are considering dropping out when dues come up again. Are you sure you are doing the right thing?

Why couldn't the dues have gone to something more reasonable like 30bucks?

I'd also like to note that I have kept my end of the bargain as a [free] member. I have sent invitations to so many friends and family and I speak highly of you to everyone I know. If you have a record of this you will see how I have outdone myself trying to get you more members. It's what you WANTED US TO DO...

So NOW you have lots more members and we are being punished for it???

I know you are swamped. But I am shocked and terribly sad that I have been cut off from the contest. Is there no other solution? Maybe FREEBIES should only be able to enter one shot per week?

But CUT RIGHT OFF???

Apparently your judges do think I have some talent. Come to my gallery and see the EP's I have gotten since late January when I joined.

Thank you for reading this and caring about me. I know I am just one voice but before this week I really admired you all too and was so proud to be part of BP.

-Laura Swan

I just don't have the time to read through >170 responses - but, here's my two cents.

As I understand it, some group of folks wanted a contests with "real prizes," but obviously this money-making opportunity wasn't seized upon by members in large numbers.

But, there is the need to generate revenue. So, let's charge for a new gallery style and "suggest" members switch from the free to the new by casting them from the contest pool. Voila. Mission accomplished.

As I've said in so many threads[and, it's been said in this one already,] members were able to enter one picture in the contest each day - just too many entries to manage. I still don't think folks will reduce their allowed number of entries, even though most are just "not too good."

It's also interesting to note the change has taken place just a short time after a long thread, that challenged the credibility of the judges, magically disappeared.

If one can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen - or, in this case, delete the critical thread.

I never entered a huge number of entries - primarily because I felt the need to enter only my "special" images. That's another reason why I maintain the free gallery.

Remember, the difference between an amateur and a professional photographer - The amateur [like most BP members] show all their images. The professional shows only his best!

It's frustrating that I'll no longer be able to enter the contest but, I'd rather save the few dollars for a Big-MAC or a gallon of gas or two [so I can go and shoot some images of a new subject.]

Some terrific suggestions here. Like Susan, I also thought the change to "paid-only entries" was a great idea when the basic gallery was only $22. And I think her suggested price structure is great.

I do understand what a big jump $49 is. I can't work and I'm on a fixed income due to disability. I haven't gotten my hair cut in a year because that's $60 I could use toward something else, like ... a payment on my Deluxe website. ;) (Like Kara says, we find ways to pay for our addictions.)

I like Kara's suggestions for the prizes. But I don't enter the contest primarily for the prizes; it's the challenge of competing against some of the best photographers out there, and getting acknowledgment for having done well.

Oh, BP offers payment plans for their courses, the websites, etc. If they can't lower the Basic Gallery fee, maybe they could have a monthly payment plan for the Basic Gallery.

Aren't we an ornery lot this morning!

A few thoughts and observations:

First, I got the impression from the early portion of this thread - and granted I might be reading into them too much - is that there is an impression that these changes will cut down on the number of poor quality images, or prevent people who lack photography skills from submitting photos. I think this is false. Personally, I have seen many gifted photographers choosing to signup for the free membership only. Likewise, I have seen some people who - how do I say this in PC way - need to work on their photography skills, with paid sites (I am not going to name names). I am okay with this; it is a matter personal preference. If someone wants to submit photos, regardless of ability, they will - and many will pay to do so! These decision; I think, will cut down the volume of photos coming each month. However, I don't think it going change the quality of the images coming in. Again, if people have money in their pocket and want to submit photos, they will. Likewise there will be many good photographers who may not be able to afford the $49 membership fee. This is unfortunate, but this is a business for BP and they have to make money.

Second, I want to address the issue of those photographers who won premium membership. I know that some of these photographers have won many times and that they are essentially free members for life. On this issue, I have to agree with Diana C. comments above. They have won the value of the membership as well as all the rights that go with it. While I do not always agree with images that BP select as winners, I have to say that they always select good quality images, and that the photographers who took those images earned their membership. I for one will admit to being jealous of these photographers at times and frustrated with selection process . However, instead of letting it get the better me, I make a point to find out how those photographers got those images and learn from them. Because of this, I like to think my photography has improved. I know that my sales have improved and that is my bottom line!!!

Finally, to those who are upset about the new price, I say go. To quote Motley Crue "don't go away mad, just go away". I don't say this to be mean. My feelings on this are that this site should be fun as well as informative. If you are not having fun, then why do it? Go find another site, use your yahoo blog, or whatever makes you happy. If you find another site, let us know - I am always interested in what other photographers are doing! If after a while you have a change of heart, then come back - I for one will welcome you.

Sincerely,

Recovering Freeloader

I have enjoyed reading all the diverse thoughts and opinions.

One that I enjoyed reminds us that NOW it is no longer a FREE CONTEST. If you want to enter you must have a PAID GALLERY!

GREAT POINT!!!

False advertising is a dangerous business if BP wants to thrive. I imagine they will have to reinstate it or change it's motto about it.

I enjoyed your response John S. among so many others. -Laura Swan

"People!! It's only 49 dollars!! Even at this price it is more than fair!! You can't buy space like this anywhere else at this price!!"

Oh yes you can. I would never post which site here, but there is at least one gallery site that's much less expensive than the initial $49 and less than the $39 too, and has a far superior layout, BUT the site has nothing else to offer and nudity and offensive adult photography is much more common than it is on BP.

Also, as I understand it if you have a Premium gallery you can enter the contest. Period. It doesn't make any difference if you won that gallery or not unless BP changes the rules again. It's pointless to gripe about it here (which I found out the hard way) and try to make those of us who have galleries for a few years feel bad, which BTW, I do not feel bad :o). I do not like the way other competitive contest sites are run so I don't enter them. That simple.

What I'd like to stress to folks is don't fight the changes here. So what if previous winners can play without paying? I can honestly say if they take that priviledge away from me tomorrow I will not be unduly upset. There are internet outlets for photography that actually pays the photographer to submit photos and anyone willing to spend some time editing can make money. It's a heck of a lot more fun to make money than it is medals :D. Hey, and guess what...you can literally spend as much time on your derriere in front of a computer doing that as you can trolling the Q&A or commenting ;). I've made over $6,000 in less than two years. No, it's not a lot of money, but it does buy the extras and a vacation every now and then :).

I would not mind the price of $49.... IF I did not already pay for a Deluxe website. It still is not too bad but for the purpose that I am using my Basic gallery for I am just fine with the classic style. I think the new gallery option looks great, I just don't really need it. I agree it would be nice to have a choice for the classic style at a lower price. Or maybe at least a discount for deluxe and pro sites owners? :)

I agree Amy J. The main problem with the pro/deluxe galleries is the fact that you can't see thumbnails with badges. That option was only available with the free/premium gallery. Now with the changes, the free won't have them because they can't enter the contest and the "basic" won't have them with the new set-up. If they make that available with the basic, I hope it carries over to those who pay for deluxe/pro.

Someone else pointed out that you can make payments for classes and deluxe/pro sites. While this was true in the past, it doesn't look like payment options are available for deluxe/pro sites going forward. There is a statement on the deluxe/pro FAQ stating that there is no payment option available at this time. That to me was a terrible decision on the part of BP. I won't renew my site without the payment options.

I have been going to some of your galleries. How come it's just one photo at a time? Eek! And I cant remark??? Ha! Guess you guys are well aware of this stuff. (I'm a FREEBIE gallery and mine is fine. Unchanged.)

I know BP values all of us and will do what's right in the end for their dedicated and faithful members such as we. Take heart. :) Even this eruptive time shall soon pass. When the dust settles maybe it will be better and brighter and even more wonderful than before. - Laura

My 3 cents worth [it was only 2 cents before July 1st...but now it also has a new look and more features] ;-) :

Bottom line is BP is a business and most do whatever is necessary for them to STAY in business....and to provide the services that it does---to existing clients and to future ones.

There are a lot of GREAT (free) services (and information) on this site that are STILL available to anyone who wishes to use them....whether they pay for classes or for gallery space or NOT.

As far as I am concerned, the biggest drawback with the new changes, is that Free gallery members no longer have their images posted on the contest pages, where they could get exposure to---and encouraging feedback---from other members who saw their photos on the "recent entries" pages.

So, in a way, only members who pay for classes, or for gallery space, (or who have done so in the past) will have the opportunity to have their photos "seen"---and commented on---by a large number of talented and knowledgeable photogpraphers from now on. Perhaps that was a "necessary evil", in order for BP to maintain that same "opportunity of exposure" for the "preferred" users (financial contributors) of the site. [I wish the member names were still shown under the thumbnails, on the contest pages.]

All businesses usually reward their longtime (loyal) and preferred (most profitable) clients/customers with discount prices, or freebies, or "exclusive" options. The other customers/clients may view that business's practice as being "unfair" to them....but it's usually sound business practice.

I agree with you Cary. Business is business...

Yet there are so many of you that were fortunate to start out like me for much longer than I.

Free gallery. You got to enter EVERY DAY for many moons if you wanted to for HOW LONG? And you got HOW MANY EP's and higher badges on a FREE GALLERY Basis???

Then upgraded when you had more confidence and were ready? (At 22 dollars)? Most of you. Your roots were humble like mine and the free gallery and contest kept you going here, like me.

Where would you have been way back then if all of a sudden you were just beginning and got cut off? Hard to say. Maybe you would not be here today.

I joined because it was free to try and enter. Now it's not free to enter that main event (Carrot) that was dangled to us all. I have to pay 50 bucks and more to take part in the FREE contest? It's not free anymore is it?!

It never happened to most of you. Your roots on this site are where mine are now. I respect your feelings but am a bit shocked at how calus people feel once they have upgraded. Like they were never there before. TRULY appreciating being able to enter a free contest to gain confidence.

I have supported many of you and consider you my friends and valued your opinions and gave you mine and have had many laughs together and have learned from one another. Now I am no one unless I pay up? Whoa. Guess that's business?

I wont even open the can or worms that money buys status. Some have told me off line that my gallery is really unique and special where other with PAID galleries suck and they have no business on BP or any real talent at all yet bought the right to enter the Free contest.

Sounds cold? Try being cut off when you were really doing well here.

I mean no harm to anyone. This is just a weird thing to be hit with all of a sudden. Like with everything else in life we get punched, we roll.

Money always talks in the end. So I will be quiet now...right?

The compromise seems so easy...$22 for the classic gallery, and $27 more ($49)to upgrade to the enhanced version. At $22, I think most folks would take a chance on that, to enter the contest. At $49, a lot of people will not...

"Sounds cold? Try being cut off when you were really doing well here."

Sorry you have been cut off, Laura! When I was doing well I would have been desolate to have been cut off abruptly. If this were the only game on the internet I'd probably still be desolate to lose my playground, but it's not. Lots of fun things to do online these days. Check out my gallery blurb for an idea or two.

I think I can safely say I would not have paid $49 to stick around back then or now. I am a little worried about what is going to happen next. Maybe they'll implement pay to play for every aspect of the site. If that happens I'd like to say "goodbye" in advance. A lot of great people here and I'd miss several of you ;) JK. I'm not even sure how to tell anyone to get in touch with me outside of BP. Hopefully if that happens we'll have a little bit of advance notice and can have a goodbye thread ;). I notice there hasn't been any reassurances this is not going to happen or maybe I'm the first to think of it???

You'll notice that there hasn't been any kind of reassurnces anywhere from BP. As usual, they introduce changes, then run and hide rather than give us any idea of what to expect. Rather than address the issues and tell us what they are going to fix with the new setup, or let us know that they understand our concerns, they are letting bad feelings fester. That will cost them business in the long run. With so many people loyal to BP, it would be nice to see some of that loyalty returned with information.

Diana, there's a lot of blind loyalty here and I imagine they know it. The site is addicting and I'm sure they know that too. Where's anyone going to go? No where on the web is there a photography site that offers as much as BP, at least not that I'm aware of. Microstock offers as much complete with forums, but people would rather play around in a contest than make a little money from their photos which I totally don't get. That's cool, more downloads for me ;).

Sarah G   This is interesting...

"Wow - now this was a very fast response from BP about the gallery name change. I just emailed them about it today @ 11am CST.

"Thanks for you inquiry regarding changes you are seeing on the site. Don't worry, nothing is changing regarding your gallery or galleries of others. We are simply changing some of the terminology of our products in anticipation of a new product that will be available in the future. Galleries that used to be called "Premium" are now called "Basic." Features and prices remain the same for those products. And keep your eyes open for the new products.""

Put in the below Q&A on 6/26/08 at almost 2 pm.

http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/QnAdetail.asp?threadID=32536

Note the "nothing is changing regarding...", AND the "features and prices remain the same..." What has NOT changed AND what has remained the same?

Hope they talk straight next time.

Loyalty...don't have any. I've almost taken a class a couple of times and then they've pulled a stunt and I've not.

This has been an inspiration for me though. I've found some classes in my area now instead. If everything works out next weekend I'll be taking a class near home and spending my money elsewhere.

When they can respond like they did ONLY FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE CHANGE, it's best to spend your money wisely.

  My 2 cents-

If you've ever taken a class you would see it can't be compared to taking a local class in a community college or continuing ed course. Just look at some of the galleries of the instructors. I started photography here ( before BP I was point and shoot only using the auto button) about a year ago. I'm not full of myself by any means but when I look at the difference in my photos I'm really proud. I still have a long way to go but I feel I'm on my way. Many of the instructors here are masters- recognized by magazines, industry leaders etc.- they aren't volunteers. I'm sure with the way prices are going up for everything (food, gas etc), so are their salaries.

I feel bad that so many people are angry with the changes. I'm sure many really good no excellent photographers will leave in anger- I hope you come back.

This site is more than a contest. Its a place to learn and make friends. If you can't afford a class then I hope you'll see $40 to $50 dollars for a gallery to display your passion is worth it.

Wow, Diana--I was the one who mentioned that, and I just got my Deluxe website about 3 weeks ago! I'm sorry they removed that option. I hope they'll still honor my payment plan. ;) But yeah, I probably wouldn't have gotten the Deluxe site without it--I don't have that much money on hand. And it's too bad it's not available for the new "Basic" galleries, because I bet a lot of people could have used it.

Sarah G   Money up front...New prices under the guise of new and improved galleries...It's a business and businesses need money to run.

Some were saying that they didn't like the name "Basic." There is a possibility that there will be a new level there eventually and you just might be able to buy yourself out of the not so nice sounding "Basic."

I still think though that the new basic galleries look nice. Who cares about a name. At least they spruce up the joint. :)

The "basic" gallery still shows as "premium" in the forum format.

I agree with Amy, Sharon and Diana regarding the "Deluxe" websites. Unless BP is planning to upgrade the features of the Deluxe sites then there is not much point in paying $199 ($169 renewal) for them. The new "basic" gallery looks so much like the Deluxe sites that I wouldn't have bought a Deluxe site. I would be more irritated by this if I hadn't taken advantage of the 2 years for 1 offer recently offered.

As I have mentioned in other threads - it would be nice if vertical images in the Deluxe sites were as large as the horizontal images (like they are in the new basic gallery).

The only advantage I see now in the Deluxe is the domain name. They need to up the number of photos it will store or something. I might just live without a domain name (after mine runs out) if they are going to leave it the same. Music and slide shows don't get it for me.

One advantage (currently, anyway) is the ability to comment on photos from the Deluxe galleries/sites, which cannot be done from the 'new and improved' Basic galleries. Until they change that, I will stick with the Classic. I can't see many people opting into the new Basic without the comment link.

I agree with Marianne and Carolyn--the main reason I wanted a Deluxe website was to be able to order my photos in groups. And the domain name was the clincher in my decision. But now the Basic gallery looks so similar, I'm not sure I'll renew my Deluxe gallery unless they make some improvements, like larger verticals and some other things.

I don't mind that you can't see everybody's comments on a particular photo, as this is common on all the websites out there that I looked at. It gives it a cleaner look, imo.

The new basic gallery is in no way, shape or form like a website.
There is no way that I can see to make a comment upon an image in the new gallery. Nor can you email the owner of this new gallery.
I plan to keep my gallery the same as before given that I have a pro website and love it.
I cannot understand how they did not get the whole thing right before making them available.
As to the free galleries...I feel that they should have kept the free gallery, but perhaps charged 10-15 dollars. It is sad that so many people are shut out from fully participating.

I was just getting ready to post that Melissa... I really think this was poorly planned.. More notice should of been given... And the quirks worked out before slapping us all with higher fees and a lap of aggravation.. I don't mind paying more, I have said before that I thought 22.00 was cheap for what we got... But for now, I have no plan of using the new look.. Too many issues... So for me it was just a price hike.. I am paid up for a few years with wins... But I can really see many members being tiffed about it...

I think what happened is, the CASH contest didn't bring in the revenue they needed so.. In go the price hikes.. And the new design was just the mattress they threw out to catch us when we fell...lol

In the end, business is business... And BP needs to make money to continue.. And want it to continue.. I am going nowhere... Hope it's all worked out soon..

Anyone hear yet if the 2nd Place winners are gone??.. or is it just the prizes for them..?

The new Basic gallery will have a discussion area whre you can comment, but they have disabled it for now until the bugs are worked ou. Also there is a contact page just like the classic version, but that can be disabled. I think BP could and should have used this down time to allow free members to enter the contest until they are up and running normally.
The 2nd Place Winners are not gone..just the prizes. No more free galleries.

Sarah G   2nd place winners gone as of when?

June's contest should NOT be under July's rule changes as the entries were submitted BEFORE the rules changed. IF BetterPhoto does this right, you won't know if 2nd place still exists in ANY form until the winners for July are listed in August. That is unless BP decides to tell us something instead of keeping us in the dark until August.

Of course, you could just take it all at face value and since the rules do not list a 2nd place, you then don't have one. You can be pleasantly surprised IF they actually list them even though they don't get a prize. You know...like the Honorable Mentions were listed in the now gone "Cash Contest."

Deb, the other day I saw the read discussion area in the new galleries. And I was using it for awhile. THen, after a time it was gone. I'm assuming that BP disabled it so we don't use the new galleries until the bugs are fixed. Yes there is a contact page, as I said, it's your choice if you want to show it. As far as the contest goes there was a 2nd Place win on the contest page listed but without prizes, but I see now that's it's gone! I sure hope they haven't done away with 2nd Place wins, only the prizes, because then most of us will never see another win!

What I do like about the (old) basic gallery is being able to organize the images the way I like. The layout has the look of a gallery wall with pictures hanging, and very easy to navigate! Now with only eight images per page it will take forever to go through someone's gallery and no one will have the patience to do so!
1,000 photos! No way!

I also like the old gallery set-up. You almost have to have it as a way to easily organize your photos for your deluxe/pro gallery. I also prefer having the badges showing at the bottom of a large thumbnail as opposed to having to open a photo see if it has an award.

I like the way my gallery is and Derek you can add color to your gallery via html wrote in your gallery text.
Mine is a peach color.

This however will not work on the FREE gallery, I have noticed it will work if the thumbnails are LARGE, not small.
If the color is added in the free gallery, only the border around the page will be that color.

Seeing is on my question I had winning a gallery what my renewal fee would be, the 39 or 49, I had emailed BP on the 1st of July with no reply, (Sarah, maybe you could have gotten a faster email response for me LOL)

SO, seeing is do not use credit cards, I have never clicked renew button found in the member center.
For those of you in the same wonderment, mine said 39.00 to renew.
NOW, seeing is I don't use credit cards, it does say e-checks, So now am seeing if they will take a e-check through pay pal if I renew.

I did send a email asking BP and told them I like the way my gallery is, and if we HAVE to change it to look the the new style.

I also did ask if the badges were going to show in the new galleries and told them, one thing I noticed, you can't get around the sight from the new style, you have to go back to the previous screen to go anywhere.
If you open someones new gallery, at the start, how the hell ya get around?
Did I miss something or not seeing it?

Wonder if I will get a response THIS TIME to my question, if they want a renewal they BETTER!

Apparently the bg color in the galleries depends on your browser because Peaches, your gallery has a white bg on my computer. I'm on a Mac using Firefox as my browser. Also, I had someone ask me how I changed my gallery text to magenta, which is odd, because on my computer, my text is turquoise.

Ya Nancy your coming up as white on my computer too?? I know what you are talking about though as I have seen people do it through the HTML code. I'd just like to see it as a user friendly interface on the classic galleries we have now!! The new galleries seem like a pain to navigate...

On eveyone that has changed there color in the galleries I can see that color.

Deb on my screen, your gallery is black BG with Turquoise lettering for the text, white for links.

You know I asked them once if they took money orders, they said yes, so I do remember going to the renew button, yes it said money order, BUT NOW, I DO NOT SEE THAT OPTION, so I HOPE you can't only pay by credit card, if thats the case, I dunno how I will be able to pay them if I renew, especially if I can't use paypal for e-checks.
Some of you have said you have called them, where is the phone number, maybe I will have to try and call to get a answer FASTER.

Here is a interesting question I got from someone,
DOES ANYONE KNOW THE ANSWER TO IT

I heard that if you have ANY gallery other than free, and you don't pay but fall to the wayside, you cant downgrade back to a free gallery. Is that true?

I agree!! I too like the old style gallery better... Leave it alone, add the ability to change the background colors, and be able to show 1000 shots... Is this too simple, or does everyone agree with this??

I like this idea , I think the old style is much better. The new color themes are God awful . Unless they can set up the new galleries like Windows color Themes you are stuck with their design.

Changing backgrounds colors and 1000 photos is a much better idea.

Derek, I agree with you! BP could have kept the same layout but with background color changes and font changes and 1,000 photos. With The New Basic who wants to have 1,000 photos with only 8 images per page! Yikes! Who would have the patience to go through all that?!

I can see the color changes with Firefox using IE. I guess with a Mac you don't?

This is off-topic, but if you can't see certain colors on Firefox (or Safari?)but you can with IE, it makes me wonder if people using IE see my photos a lot differently than I do!?

Back to the bg colors in the Premium (oops, BASIC) gallery -- maybe it is a Mac thing. I can see black bg's (like my own), and I can see Carol Teal's grey bg...but I've read where people have mentioned their blue, or pink, or in Peaches' case, peach bg's -- and I can't see any of those. Weird, eh?

I also can't click on any of the links in the Snap Shot emails from BP -- they don't work for me at home, but they do at work on my PC.

I have a PC and I am not seeing certain colors... I think it has more to do with the browser than the operating system, or type of computer. It's fine to add in extra HTML but there is no guarantee that everyone viewing your gallery is seeing what you want them to see. That is why a color choice from BP is better, and will likely work for everyone, rather than just anybody trying to do it themselves which does work but only if you have the right browser set up it seems...

With regards to the IE vs Foxfire issue, those green buttons from the cash contest show up to the side of the photo in Foxfire, and not underneath the photo. Drives me nuts because it throws off the gallery page.

Seems that BP pages are formated for IE.

I'm more fed up about the same old photographes being picked as winners each month . ie. women with scarves wrapped around their heads , flowers with the water filter and so on . Can't the powers that be pick something else for a change . There are a ton of over looked images that I think are much better and different . There goes my chances of ever winning . BP you need to expand your choices instead of the same old same old .
Maybe some people can't afford to pay for the site , and there are a few young kids on here , that don't have their own credit card .
You're squashing peoples talent !!!

"<-- Maybe I should better change my mini pic. You know, with the head scarf and all.

LOL Susan! Hmm... I didn't realize a head scarf was the key to winning--maybe I should try that! ;)

Seriously though, Joan, I think I understand what you're saying about the subjects and the winners, although I think it's two different issues. One is subject matter--with so many people taking photos nowadays, and soooo many photos on this site alone, it's inevitable that we'll see the same subjects and subject treatments over and over again. I could mention, for example, the sunset/landscape with the rocks in the foreground, or the portraits of pregnant women holding their stomachs, but I won't. ;)

The other issue is what BP looks for in a photo, and I think they do have a certain style they're looking for-- composition that emphasizes the rule of 3rds, clarity, "perfect" exposure, strong colors, etc. It's a different look than photos you'd find at JPG.com or other sites--and maybe not as "edgy" or "artistic" as other sites.

So, if what seems to be a cliched subject/treatment wins over and over again, I think it's because it fits the BP criteria mentioned above, not necessarily because of the subject matter/treatment. Just my 2 cents.

I joined BP recently and the main feature that attracted me was the free contest, where even beginners like me can contest with established and experienced talent in the field.I thought it was a great idea and it was the biggest strength of BP.I was really very disappointed to know that BP has put an end to the free contest. As some of you mentioned before, it would reduce the number of entries considerably (and that,I think, is what exactly they wnated)but that would only reduce the quality than increasing it,and many talented people who do not have a paid gallery ,will lose their chance. I was thinking of purchasing a premium gallery , but now with these changes,I got a bad feeling and now I am not sure whether I would go for it.I feel it is unfair to force people to pay for a gallery, just for entering a contest, but again, the owners of the site can do whatever they want, and make more money out of the whole business.
I can see that not many free gallery owners responded to this change.Anyone with an opinion out there?

Re Joan's complaint about the same type of shot winning every month, I tend to agree with her..I get so tired of women with scarves around their heads. I can't believe there aren't other good shots in the people category. Also veiled water over rocks with a sunset in landscapes. I know they're good, but there's other shots that are also good. VARIETY, people!

Rubeena, I feel the same way. it's not about the price increase any more. for me, i'm having trouble trusting that if I put my 50$ into this site that they won't decide to change something else and i'll have to fork over more money. there's also the many problems that have happened with the new sites and many questions about the contest and you are not hearing anything from anyone at BP addressing any of these concerns.

i'm going to just wait and see what happens before I decide what i'm going to do next.

Sarah G   I can't resist...

Derek it isn't about A scarf but what is right for the venue.

You need red and/or green for Christmas, red, white and blue for 4th of July.

It also depends upon the mood you want to set...trendy, conservative, etc.

ONE single scarf just won't do. :)

I haven't read all the responses yet, but came over here to ask a question when I found this thread. I didn't realize the contest had shut out the free galleries. I never entered for anything but seeing a possible win under my photos and earned some editor's picks and placings which is really nice. I was extremely disappointed to discover this thread and the shut out of freebies. Considering that I NEVER got feedback from the judges (as far as I knew) makes me question why I would want to spend any money here when I have memberships to pro photo groups, etc. Also, the few times early on when I first began here, I did try to post for CC and still never received anything. It really wasn't worth my effort. I loved coming here and seeing all the contest entries and discovering new photographers 'out there'... I don't know if I plan to get a $22 gallery or not...it would feel like I'm paying to enter a contest and I'm not big on that idea either. I love BetterPhoto. I did notice that so many of the recent contest entries didn't really seem to fit the categories they were entered in, or were very snapshot-ish...Who knows..maybe it will be for the better...I'll watch and see before making a final decision.

Sarah G   Toni,

You can't get a $22 gallery anymore. Along with the shut out came an increase under the guise of a changed gallery format. The cost of start up is now $49.

And yes I think the new style gallery LOOKS nice, but it is still a way to raise the price without you having to pay for the same old thing that's been around for a while.

It's a business/psychological ploy everyone uses when they NEED to bring in money. Everything is going the way of the gas prices...UP.

Amateurs! What you should be uploading is a woman in scarf holding a flower with water dripping off while she watches the sunset by a waterfall with veiled water over rocks. She could be pregnant with a hand on her belly and a little dog at her feet.

It's a grand prize winner for sure!

I also post a lot of the ones she was complaining about, but I sure see her point. It seems like all you have to do to get a shot at people is shoot somebody in a scarf. I can't recall a month when one didn't win something in a looooooong time. It seems like it's become a knee jerk response with the judges so they don't really have to look any further.

Is there a way to stop this thread? The last hundred comments or so just haven't been on target and, really are chronic complaints.

If one doesn't win, s/he complains. And, now that folks that have freebie galleries can't compete, there's a new level of complainant.

As I said much earlier in this thread, BP is not an altuistic web site. It's a business. If cash can't be generated through fees for entering contests that offer token cash prizes, then eliminate the competitors by restricting free contest entrants to "payees and prize-winners." Of course, the contests are no longer "free."

This doesn't mean the best iages will be entered or win. It does assure that more cash is coming in.

So, everyone who's annoyed . . . why not cancel your BP membership? And, if you've got another issue like judging or portraits that need a scarf to win, perhaps start a new thread.

And, perhaps, if enough members that don't want/need a paid gallery but wanted to compete wrote Jim a note directly, maybe things could go back to the way they were. But, maybe not . . .

But, I sure wish the number of entries per member per month were reduced. That's where the real problem is.

This is too funny, Susan. :)

The flower the pregnant woman is holding should be a rose, just budding.
Just beyond the waterfall with veiled water over the rocks, daffodils growing, plenty of them all with the whites slightly blown out. It's raining dandelion seeds, and somewhere in the image the frac filter as the finishing touch.!
Carolyn, I never noticed it before but your right about the headscarf pics winning every month. Now I know why my
pregnant woman holding flowers entry didn't make the cut, I forgot the headscarf! LOL!

Ken, maybe she is just repeating what the original topic was...I looked and didn't see anything new, besides what was announced by Jim that started this thread.

And a few days ago, I submitted a waterfall with veiled water and rocks behind it. It got an EFP! It is a bit different though than a lot of waterfall shots! :) And reading this thread has given me great ideas! I must not be very observant because I didn't know about the women and scarves. Wonder if I put a scarf on Hershey if that would work? I like the ideas above about the PG lady standing by a waterfall at sunset holding a flower and a dog at her feet, etc. I have the dog, but don't know any pregnant women right now. :( I guess I won't EVER get that grand prize! LOL J/K

Sorry about that Ken! I was just trying to be funny about getting back on topic. I don't have any new information.

All joking aside, I did try to look through Editor's picks and there is nothing there now. The page comes up, but no photos. Anyone else getting that too? Does this mean they aren't doing EFPs any more?

Sarah G   There are NO photos. Either no EFPs any more or they are working on an issue. Don't know why they left the link if they don't plan on using it. They could have put a message up instead of having us speculate, BUT then again speculation keeps one interested.

I don't know who/what Hershey is but a guy put a veil on his dog once and entered it. The thing was side splitting funny! I bet it's still on the site but I don't have the link anymore.

I remember that!! It was great! The EFPs are still in our galleries, so maybe just a glitch or they are going to present them in a better way so the same ones don't come up over and over and over, etc...

Given all the glitchy / buggy problems they've been having with pretty much every change they put up, I'd assume every weird behavior is a side effect of some other new change.

The problem is obviously that the BP code base has been hacked to near death and it is now so badly structured that every change causes a rippling of unintended changes, requiring additional changes, which ripple... etc, etc.

This is not an uncommon problem. The only real solution is a total code redesign / rewrite and much, MUCH better QC.

I feel sorry for the BP folks... this will not be cheap, quick or easy to fix, I'm sure!

Hah!

Well, as Bill Gates has proved... put out horribly buggy but feature rich (even if the features don't work) software before anyone else, market the heck out of it and... viola! ... become the richest man in the world :D :D

Doesn't anyone in the software industry remember what happened to the US auto industry when they tried this in the '70s....?

I am amazed and disappointed there's no mention of the contest changes or the gallery changes in Snapshot. There's even a section called "Updates From BetterPhoto" but of the three items listed, two aren't anything new, just plugs for the courses, and the other is about the keyworder thing. I don't understand why they couldn't have written two sentences about the changes. Even something as simple as, "We've made these changes, we're reading your feedback, working out glitches, look for more info soon."

When I joined I paid the $22.00 membership fee. What a nice price for one year of wonderful entertainment! I won a couple of years and if I am lucky enough to win any more, great, but if I don't, I will gladly pay another membership. It is STILL a wonderful price for one year of entertainment. Thanks Jim!

I have now been informed that the price of a membership has increased. I would hope that free members had reasonable notice so as to work the increase in to their budget and be able to enjoy this site if they wanted. Something like a two-week or one month notice would be fiar. I am not surprised at the increase, everything else is increasing in price these days. I must say that I don't attend the movies and very rarely dine out (yea, I'm cheap - LOL) so I still consider the price reasonable and believe me, I'm on a very limited budget.

Sarah G   No Susan there was not "warning," except for the change of name to "Basic." Then there was aslo the July 1 message.

On June 26 (4 days before the changes) this was sent as a responce to one person's question. It's above, but here it is again...

I came to BP on the recommendation of a friend who is a professional photographer a little over a year ago. I was brand new at any kind of photography and was thrilled to be able to have a free gallery and have access to photographers of every level. I then thought $22 was a great price to be able to have 300 pictures in my gallery and eventually did that. (I was also very thrilled, as you can imagine, and more than a little embarrassed, to get a 2nd place winner on a picture I took within a month of getting my 1st camera, a great little point+shoot Olympus.)

BP has provided a place to really help me grow as a photographer and I am very thankful for that. I'll always be grateful to Joan Powell, who was the first person to ever contact me at BP. She invited me to a fun "contest" of a group of fun photographers which developed into the Silly Saturation Shootout club, where I have spent many hours peeing my pants I was laughing so hard- and also where I learned a LOT about using Photo Elements.

I have since bought a dig. SLR camera, took a 4-week beginner's course at BP, and in 12/07 was accepted as a contributing member of a stock photo agency (NOT a micro-stock agency) and 90% of my photography time has been devoted to shooting pictures to submit there. I have BP to thank for that- all the good friends I have made here, the course I took, having a gallery and BP making this a safe place to get constructive criticism by having good guidelines for that. I appreciate how BP has encouraged expert photographers help us babies along.

That 2nd place win I got won me a 22-dollar year of a gallery, which I am still coasting on.

I've been so busy that I totally missed all these changes that have just been made. I guess the one thing I don't agree with, and think BP is being a little piggy about, is not offering free galleries anymore, forcing people not to be able to enter the free contest unless they fork over $49 per year- ESPECIALLY in the economic climate we're in- and we all know it's going to get worse- with global warming causing all the terrible weather around the world which is affecting food stocks. Yikes! My regular "gig" is being a jazz bassist and piano and bass teacher who never has had anything left over after putting a roof over my head and necessities like that. I am now squeezed to the limit. Believe me, I am basically terrified as I watch the health of our planet and our economy nose dive.

I have had the distinct pleasure of encouraging several children who have galleries on this website. One, I know, is around 12 or 13, is troubled and has a pretty big issue with low self esteem. having a (free) gallery at BP has really helped. To feel his pride when he got an editors' pick was truly wonderful. To think that this might be taken away from him because his parents cannot afford the $49 to enable him to keep entering his pictures into the free contest is troubling to me and I have a heavy heart about it.

I don't know if I will pay the $49 to renew when my time comes around. I hate the thought of not being able to be in the SSS club anymore and easily be in community with my BP "family". But on the other hand, I barely have the time to hang out here anymore. We shall see.

I didn't mean to write up this whole thing. Didn't really know what I was going to say other than I disagree with no free galleries anymore. I would think a free gallery could be BP's way of "giving back". I hope they change their mind about this. I can't imagine they aren't making enough money to be able to continue to offer it and let people with these galleries to enter into the free contests, too.

Ok, Denis. Thanks for the clarification. I still think those people should be able to enter the contest.

I notice that the option for entering into the cash contest is not there anymore, when I look at an image in "edit". If that's true, does anyone know why? Are they exchanging that for this?

I've been gone for only 10 days, and what was waiting for me here....surprise!
I tried to read all of these to catch up what's going on, we are talking and talking here, and some people have very good, reasonable opinions and suggestions, but my question is:
Will BP listen???

Jim said: "too many excellent photos end up getting passed over each month. It seemed unfair to us that so many great photographers were getting overlooked."

But by eliminating "free gallery people" from the contest, BP is not saving "great photographers" but
throwing away a lot of them, not to mention "overlooked" or "not fair"
It sounds like good photographers can be found only in PAID galleries and it's absurd.
I know this is a business and money is important, what I am saying is, please don't pretend like the purpose of this change is to save good photographs, because it is not.

Also this price up....meaning only "people with money" can survive this change?
Whatever 29 or 49 or 22 dollars is worth to be at BP? is not the point. (it is worth but..)
There is no choice for us and less choice for free gallery owners are the points and it's not good or fair.
We are a happy family here, I don't want to lose any of my friends....

You know I think the thing that has bothered me the most is the fact that I just log in one day and everything has changed.
I know BP has the ability to send out a mass email to all their members. They really should have done this to prevent a lot of the negative feelings about the way this was handled. In my opinion that would have been the professional way to handle it.

You are so right, Lisa! They could have taken the time they're taking now to fix all these glitches, as a transition period so that members with free galleries had some time to decide to upgrade and still enter the contest until the new Basic galleries are up and running. It would have been at least common courtesy!

That's exactly what I've been saying from the start. BP is being very unprofessional about all this. And what else has me worried. They fact that they won't answer our concerns (EP still going to be given?, Second place mentions but no awards?, no comment link on the new galleries?) isn't a good sign that they even CARE what we think or feel about what they're doing. Again very unprofessional!!!

Sarah G   Well, whether they tell us 7, 15 or even 30 days in advance or give us a surprise party (their favorite way of doing things) the changes will happen anyhow.

They need to remember that they are a service orientated business and in that venue the customer is supposed to be their number one concern.

My daughter is working at KFC this summer. She rolls her eyes and says, "The customer is always right." That's the motto.

BP makes me feel that they don't remember what's on the other side of the computer code.

Without us they don't have anything. Only thing is, is that they know that there is always someone who wants to be apart of what they choose to offer.

Things always change, change is inevitable. They can't please everyone, so they do what makes them happy/seems the best thing to do.

Some will dislike it and leave. Some will live with it and stay. Others will absolute love it. Some would have been drawn to the site with the old stuff in place, yet others will come because of the new stuff.

Whatever way you look at it...

Welcome to the new looking, but still the same, "Hello, Does anyone know we are out here, BP."

"My daughter is working at KFC this summer. She rolls her eyes and says, "The customer is always right." That's the motto."

Yes, on an individual basis, but KFC doesn't get every customers' opinion before they roll out a new product, or take away a product. That would be more similar to what BP has done with the contest and gallery changes.

And it's very rare for a company to change its products just because some--or many--people like the old version. As you mentioned, they can't please everyone (no matter what they do), and some BPrs will leave and others will stay.

Personally, I doubt there are many people, including me, who are totally happy with the changes and the way they were implemented. But as with any business, it seems that the best way we can "vote" is with our feet--either leave the site if we can't live with the changes, or stay if we can.

  Jut got this from BP

We are working on enhancements to the Basic BetterPholio features, and you can also count on seeing these corrections soon:
- The "Discuss this Photo" option will be back soon
- Editor's Picks and Contest wins/finalist buttons should be displaying
- Removing the "save picture as" option when you right click on a photo

If you have made a suggestion for further enhancements, we have noted these for consideration.

Thank you for your feedback.

As I read the posts I'm thinking about how the people who made these decisions know that this will all blow over pretty soon. It will shake out as to who will be leaving and who stays. New people will be coming into BP all the time who never knew you could enter the contest without having to pay to, that the price was $22 and jumped to $49 in one fell swoop. These new people will experience what we know from history what they're in for when the time comes that the powers that be decide it's time to pile on more income. Pretty depressing..

I appreciate the fact that BP is a viable business and must make management decisions as all businesses do.   I have tried to browse most of the comments here but wonder if anyone can help, I notice the 2nd place prize has gone from the contest page with the info and prizes. I did write to BP to ask if the 2nd place awards would still be issued, with or without the prize but have had no response. Personally I don't mind not getting a prize but I do enjoy the competition and it is so tough here with so many fantastic photographers that I can't see me ever getting a 1st, I really think it would be a big loss to remove the 2nd place gold badges. Does anyone know if they are staying or going?

Lynne, I agree with Colleen. There was wild speculation about the gold medals going away...kinda like speculation on EPs going away because of the recent glitch on the EP page, but they're still around. There's no reason to think BP would stop issuing out the gold buttons. They're doing it for finalists and EPs, and there's no prizes for them either.

I was delighted to see the comment feature in the new galleries, so I was going to continue the tedious task of creating albums this morning, and then switch over to the new style. But as soon as I switched to the new view, I saw this message in red, dated today:

7/12/2008 A round of updates are coming through, so you may experience some issues with new Basic BetterPholio's over the next few hours...

SO....I guess I will continue to wait before making the switch...

The good thing is, even after you start creating your new albums and pages, you can still switch back and forth between old and new without losing the updates you've made to the new gallery.

This is just my opinion. Personally, I like the old contest better. It gave everyone exposure, it was fun, and it was fair. I never complained about all my photos not winning First or Second place. Some of my photos made it to Editor's Pick's and I have one that made it to the Finalist, but I did not complain. If my work did not win, I have this "There's Always Next Time," attitude. I understood that I was competing with all the other photographers who had great pieces posted on this web site. For the contest to be changed, I am not blaming BP for this, but I am blaming some of the members who complained to BP that their work did not win all the time.

I've only been a member of this site since Sept 2006, and have entered an average of 360 photos a year. I originally found BP when I did a google search for "free photo contests." I have learned a lot and have grown tremendously from being a member.(thank you BP and BP members)
That having been said, I "think" that BP was hoping that the recent CASH Contest would be profitable enough to financially justify their continuance of the (absolutely) free contest (and the growing number of entries, every month). For whatever the reasons, the Cash Contest did not "succeed" as well as--I imagine--they assumed it would (especially considering the cheap entry fee, for a chance at $1000).
Add to that the many "paying" members who were grumbling about their "overlooked" entries (out of a thousand OTHER photos entered every day)....and BP probably had to make some kind of change---to stay profitable. The contest entries seem to down about 20%--so far--so, the judging staff shouldn't be as overwhelmed as they must have been at 1000+ entries a day.

Sarah G   ...And there are still those who wish BP would not overlook their image for EFP. NOTHING will fix that issue and every body knew that nothing would fix that. The changes are a money issue (cost of man hours to judge, etc.). Prices are going up everywhere, plain and simple.

Leanne Ruter   I won't be paying for a gallery. Not when I only enter 1 or 2 photos a month. I was happy to submit a photo here and there, most getting no comments but that didn't matter when it was free.

I think BP will lose a lot of novice photographers.

Going from an open contest to a restricted one degrades the value of any BetterPhoto contest win. I'm saddened by this news. I don't think I'll pay $49 for a basic gallery just so I can enter 10 or 12 photos per year into contests.

I just have to say that being a member here for about two years, I am really missing entering the contest. Although I really enjoyed this site , I will not pay 50 dollars to get a gallery and be eligable to enter into the contest. Its really too bad.

"For the contest to be changed, I am not blaming BP for this, but I am blaming some of the members who complained to BP that their work did not win all the time."

Sorry, Charlie, but I can't imagine the owner of this site changing anything because a few people whine about different things. Sure, they may add something like the EP medals to encourage those that rarely win, but from my perspective it's all about money. They probably had to make some changes to stay in business OR make the business more profitable.

Well, this is probably stating the obvious, but if enough people DON'T upgrade from free and BP happens to percieve that lack as possibly detrimental to their overall income or other objectives (course enrolements), then, it's reasonable to expect they might change this policy.

Which is to say, I wouldn't suggest betting or banking on such a change. Just that it's not impossible. Even if not likely soon. :)

Sarah G   Well, I wonder why Jim started the message about the contest changes with

"Message from Jim

Dear Valued Customers and BetterPhoto Members:

As many of you know, the contest activity at BetterPhoto has grown very large over the past several years. Complaints about the contest have become so frequent, we realized we need to make some changes. For one thing, too many excellent photos end up getting passed over each month. It seemed unfair to us that so many great photographers were getting overlooked. To create a solution that is both fair and scalable, we have decided to take the following actions."

if it had nothing to do with complaining people.

They claimed they were appeasing "The People" in the statement above. There had been a lot of noise, but that stuff hasn't changed. They are still saying "I can't believe they passed that one up."

In the end though, it is ALL about putting gas in the tank. I've got to be able to do the same thing as the owners of BP, so I won't be shelling out the cash much to the demise of BP's gas tanks. In this day in age every penny counts.

Sarah G   AND every time I visit a gallery that is in the new format I groan. I attempt to see what I want, get frustrated because I can't really do so and LEAVE. Just what everyone wants, people leaving their galleries.

They are pretty when you first see them, but the beauty is only skin deep.

It's been six months... Now there are new changes with the same problems as before... No advance notification, notification to only a select few before the actual notification, etc. Just wanted to bring this thread back to the forefront as a reminder of continuing issues before my BP account expires and I can't comment anymore.
