Nikon VR lenses Nikon's VR lenses have switches to turn Af and VR capabilities on or off. I can understand this for the AF feature but why would anyone want to turn the VR feature off? Is there a downside to always leaving it on?

Yes, there are some down sides. 1) Drains the battery faster. 2) VR should not be used when a tripod is employed. Without going into all the tech mumbo jumbo, VR uses accelerometers, voice coil outputs to the lens elements for movement, and vector analysis for input to the coils. When mounted on a tripod, VR looks for data. (i.e) camera movement. When there is none, VR is confused and attempts to "find" movement. If there is none, it fabricates a reference; causing false corrections. Tripos mount?..Leave VR off.
