Photography Question

Connie Kay Davis

What kind of lights should I use in a pet shop?

I've been 'hired' to take portraits of pets mainly dogs, in a high end pet boutique. The store has lots of good track lighting. I'll be bring my own backdrops & wonder what kind of additional light I will need to prevent getting shadows. I'm not experienced with positioning lights under these circumstances.I will be shooting with a digital SLR 10mg. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks

Hi Connie,

if by 'track lighting' you mean your typical shop lighting, possibly even halogen, with lots of movable spotlights, I have bad news for you: they are going to complicate your exposures! You will need to 1) use too slow shutter speeds for fast moving pets. The spot lights will 2) create lots of unwanted shadows, and 3) you will get all sorts of color temperature issues.

Best is to use flash light and to rely solely on your own lighting set up. You would need at least 2 lights, off-camera, and to either side of it, to somewhat control the shadows. More lights if you want a good background too. Standard flash guns or strobes are point-shaped lightsources that create sharp-edged shadows. You may want to soften them with soft boxes, and/or fill them with (a) (D-I-Y) reflector(s).

Have fun!

If you are going to invest in lighting, I recommend you invest in 1-2 strobes an work up to three, there is no differance between photograhing pets or humans, except the patiance in dealing with a animal who is unruley and untrained.
LOL, some what like your average two year old who'd rather be doing anything else but being photographed.
People who come for Pet Portraits expect the same professional quality they want in thier own portraits,so be prepare to give that in every aspect.
But I love doing these shots, they are very rewarding and a whole lot of fun!

If you need more help in your purchase of lights, you can email me with your possible budget an I will be more then glad to help.
Wishing you all the best in your venture,
