Speedlight vs strobe

What strobe wsecond compares with a Speedlight 580EX? Not taking into account recycle time, just in terms actual light output.

  Hi Marius,

Sorry to report that there is no math formula for this conversion due to the fact that different flash heads output at different angles and each utilizes a different reflector design and surface.

Gregory is correct you compare guide numbers:

This unit’s guide number is 191 English system using feet and ISO 100 setting.
Coverage is for a 105mm lens mounted on a full frame digital or film camera.

Thus for lamp-to-subject distant 15 feet 191/15 = f/11.7

Happy day,
Alan Marcus

  Hi Marius,
Studio strobes rarely give guide numbers. The studio or mono light strobes output will vary widely depending on how the light is set up, as rightly stated above. Units like the 580 compare to a unit with about 75 watt-seconds, not very much power. An additional reason, as you may have surmised, to prefer mono lights or studio strobes is that they recycle much more quickly. Thanks, John Siskin
