Best technique to crop an oval shaped portrait? Hi, I am in the process of archiving a friend's portrait collection. Most of the paintings are rectangular in shape. However, a few are oval shaped. My friend would like them to be cropped without the frames. Using the crop tool in photoshop doesn't work, because it is rectangular and in some paintings the hands of the subject get cut off. I have also tried using the magnetic lasso tool to select the image and then right clicked the image to use the inverse selection tool. This techinique was limited in its success, because I have not yet been able to make a perfect oval. The magnetic lasso will invariably stick inside or outside the oval, making this technique extremely difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions? If so would you please lay it out step by step? I am using Elements 4. Any thoughts will be truly appreciated! Sincerely,

I have PSE 5. If you have the "Cookie Cutter Tool" in PSE 4 its in there. There are various shapes including oval.

Thanks Sarah. I have tried the cookie cutter, but I don't know how to use it correctly. When I have tried the oval it has 2 circles connected together looking much like an oval frame. When I crop with it, it only keeps the narrow band of picture between the 2 circles, eliminating the rest of the picture. How do you get it to crop and keep the inside of the portrait? Thanks again. Greg

Select the oval, carefully, invert and make transparent?

Thanks W.S. That was my thought process yesterday, but when the cookie cutter was being used, I couldn't select inverse. It was disabled along with most of the other options. Is there a command for inverse that will override the program say like "control I"? Greg

Thank you for your help Sarah and W.S. I truly appreciate it. I had been selecting the "thin circular frame" cookie cutter thinking it was the oval cutter. I have found the oval cutter and will hopefully have some success. THanks again! Greg
