Photography Question

Patti Hogan

Help with inside photos with Nikon SB800.

I've volunteered to photo a group event at church and will be inside using a Nikon D200 with an SB800 attached.
I am new to this on camera flash (and don't like it anyway, but that's beside the point) I've got to get good at it in a short period of time.
Are there any sure fire ways to get a good exposure that doesn't make everyone look like "deer in the headlights" look??

Yes. Absolutely. First, read the two books that came with the SB800. Second, once you've done that, then start practicing with it. It's an excellent piece of equipment. There's a reason why Nikon is one of the primary lights of choice for photojournalists and event shooters.

OTOH, move everyone outdoors and use fill flash...but I suppose you might find that's a separate problem. With all due respect Patti, in the future, you might consider not volunteering to do something you don't seem to know how to handle and defer to someone who does.

  hey patti,
um,what lenses?lens?
and it's really not an on camera flesh.you'll be surprised how well a dedicated flash works.
I would use it in auto mode and switch between the program modes since you say your not really familar with it's use.
be careful of large lens hoods, could cast shadows, and shooting verticals for kinda the same reason.well not really because the coverage is different.
give the flash head one click up from the lowest position, almost never red eye,and just allow the cameras metering system to do it's job.
get permission from the church and take some friends with you in what you think will be like clothing,go to the church and fire away.
if with the, mostly, low church lighting you may want to bump your iso even to 400 to capture more of the room or venue lighting, check it out.
then if there's going to be movement, and you left out the speed of your lens/lenses,ability,might want to check your horoscope.
hopen ya got your humor ears on with that last remark, sam
