Photography Question

Ron Ross

Adobe CS on ebay

Hope this is the right forum topic to address this question.

I am getting ready to purchase Adobe CS software and began comparing prices. I searched on ebay and found sites selling the software for a good bit less than what I expected.

Has anyone purchased this way?

Thanks for your time and help,

Ron

  Ron - several thoughts.

1. Adobe Photoshop CS3 has been on the market for almost a year. Available copies of CS may or may not be "new;" that is in unopened boxes.

2. Because there are two versions beyond CS, it's not surprising that the price is low. But, again, is the box unopened and is the software "unused?"

3. If the software is used, the license probably isn't transferable. Thus, you might not be able to qualify for automatic upgrades, etc.

4. If you're thinking about CS, why not think about CS2. It's probably available off-price too, but be sure the software is new and the box unopened. CS2 seemed to rated as a significant upgrade of CS whereas, according to some reviews I've read, CS3 may not have the same level of improvement over CS2.

5. Adobe Lightroom just might be a better choice as it is specific to photography, whereas CS [CS2 and CS3] work in a more "graphic arts climate."

  Hi Debby -

I have no personal experience with Vista but several friends who are really into computers and software advise that Vista is a real disaster. Apparently, Microsoft will shortly issue a Service Pack which, hopefully, will correct many of Vista's problem areas.

It's also been reported that Vista might soon be completely replaced. It's obviously horrible, as was Windows 98 Millenium Edition.

I've read a lot of articles suggesting that many Photoshop applications don't do well with Vista. I personally will not upgrade from Windows XP Professional, especially since there's word that SP-3 is on the way. Many of the features touted in Vista are included in SP-3.

Regards,
John

  Yes John,
It does have it's difficulies!
My daughter, said they have friends that have been buying windows XP and putting it on their new computers that other wise come with Vista.
This may be the way for me as well.
PhotoShop 7.0 does work, but since I do not know alot about PS applications,I can't tell wether everything is working properly or not.
I would like to work with some of the B&w tools, but need to get instuction first.
( thier was a thread here about the Nov 06 winner and how Mario got that metal look to his B&W,maybe I need to email him then see if all works with PS 7 and Vista)
But thank you for all your help,
Debby

Hi Debby, just another perspective. I use CS3 and Capture NX on Vista Ultimate and have had no problems. CS3 loads faster on Vista and color rendering in Vista appears to be better than XP. You may check with those people having problems, they may be running Vista home edition which I have heard has problems.

Oh, another point. Vista is a Ram pig so if you are running on just 2 G of Ram this could cause performance problems. I have 4 G on my desktop and laptop.
