I am new to this site and by no means claim to be a good photographer. My friend started a newspaper and I was sitting in his office and he asked me if I wanted to go cover a basketball game so thats how I got into it. I spent the first year with a Kodak 300 dollar camera. He then bought the D70 S and although I have luck on occasion, most of the pics are dark or blurry. The only setting I have luck with is M, ISO is on auto and always hits 1600, F4 is as low as I can get it to go, 160-200 on shutter. I use a Sigma 70-300 mm lens. Below are some examples of my work. Any tips would be appreciated!

you will need a fast lens, the faster the better, one that will provide at least a constant 2.8 aperture, even then you may have to use smart photography to get the shot, get close to the court, timing the shot is important meaning not taking the shot in extreme speed /movement of players, is the court lit evenly, if feasable go to the side of the court with the most light, is a VIP allowed to use a video camera use his lighting when posible.

What should I do as far as settings go?? My friend has a Cannon and shoots in TV mode and they look perfect. Here are some I took at Rupp Arena (Home of the University of Kentucky) which is VERY well lit. I think on these I put it on automatic and just turned the flash of since I was sitting right under the goal. I want these results no matter where I shoot. They say
