Help in Deciding on a New Lens

I just upgraded from a Rebel XT to the 40D. My current lenses are 24-105 and 70-300 4-5.6 IS (which I use for children's soccer games and nature pics-bird, deer, etc.) I also have the 50 1.8 to use in low light situations. We're going to travel to Mexico this summer and I'd like to photograph the Mayan ruins. Am trying to decide if I need more of a wide angle. Have considered the 17-55, 17-40, and 10-22. I'm thinking whatever I purchase will not become my walk around, but will be used mostly for specific situations. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

  Hi, Bonnie,

I have the EFS 10-22 which is a good compliment to the EF 24-105 (great lens!).

A note on the 70-300: it's a decent lens but the 70-200 f/2.8 is a great lens. I used each lens extensively on separate trips and there is no comparison.

It is a bit pricey compared to the slower lenses, but you will find a number of improvements over the 70-300. It focuses faster , quieter and more reliably and is a sharper lens.

Add a 1.4x or even 2x extender and you have a lot of versatility.

Cheers,

RK

I took all of my Tulum photos with a Rebel XT and a Tamron 28-200. With your 40D, you still have a 1.6 sensor, so for a ruin with more to see, like "Chichen Itza, you might be better off with a 14mm. I'd take my Sigma 10-20 next time, along with a Tamron 18-250. Hope this helps.
