when i look through my camera everything is black


i just bought a Phenix 3000 for my photo class, ive never used a manual camera before, and its brand new. when I look through the camera everything is black, and I dont know whats wrong.
my photo teacher told me to try new batteries, and I did and its not working stlll. what could be the problem? its only a few weeks old and ive never used it. I dont know much about manual cameras. please help someone?

At the risk of being obvious, have you removed the lens cap? Unlike simply compact cameras, with an SLR like this the viewfinder looks through the lens rather than just being a window through the camera body.

  Have you tried to run film through it yet? Maybe the film needs to be advanced so that the mirror can be reset and swing down and out of your line of sight.
