Checking Picture Quality

Is there a small optical lense that you can look through to check for picture quality? For exanple looking at an original photo versus a picture from a good photo book looks the same from the naked eye, but I would assume the photo would be a larger dpi??? Any help?

  Jeff,

What you're asking about is called a "loupe." For 35mm small format, one in the 4X to 8x range of magnification usually works well. Photographic loupes often have a clear skirt around the bottom to allow light to reach the area of film or print it's being used to examine.

Optical quality varies greatly, as does price. You can get a decent one from a large camera store for under $50. The very high end loupes rival the finest camera lenses and are priced at $300 and more. Many of us don't need that much optical quality or precision in a loupe to evaluate negatives, slides and prints.
