question about newer Canon cameras

I have a Canon 10D and while I love it, it is kind of hit and miss on the focus and quality. If the lightning is great I always get a beautiful shot, but when I start to get into the high ISO's, low lighting and the such it becomes a challenge. I have heard from the pro's in magazines and online that the newer SLR's shooting over 20mp can shoot at 3200 with absolutely no grain in low light lit scenes and flash is no longer necessary. Are they just trying to sell a high end camera or is it true?

  Paul,

The 10D is old sensor technology; the camera was released in 03, the sensor was designed on 00.

Yes; high line camera's (sensors) can indeed shoot at high ISO's with very little noise. I am experiencing this now with my Nikon D-300. It blows away my D2x in the noise arena..especially above ISO 800.

If you are considering buying a 20MP camera, I hope your bank account is deep! Look into (Sinar) or a digital back for any medium format. Ouch!

all the best,

Pete

The 5D is a Very Good camera to use with high ISO. The medium format cameras are traditionally used in Highly Controlled studio conditions and if I'm not mistaken the H3D only goes to ISO 400. The latest Canon 1Ds MarkIII is fantastic in higher ISO settings but if you really have the need for crazy high ISO shooting you're probably best off with....and it hurts to say...NIKON. Just BLEW my mind when I read this detail...and the camera's cheap.
Nikon D3
Extreme Low-noise ISO range with Advanced Noise Reduction enables photographers to confidently select from 200-6400 ISO with an expanded range that includes Lo-1 (100 ISO)Hi-1 (12,800 ISO) and Hi-2 (25,600 ISO)

Thanks for the response, but I'm already pretty deep in on my lenses. The body will have to follow me purchasing all the lenses that I want. My grandmother left me a trust which will help me buy all the gear that I dream of, but I am not allowed to touch it until I'm 40! By then they will probably be in the 40mp range and the cost will be $20,000 just for the body.
