Nikon 50mm f1.8, or f1.4 for lowlight capture I'm currently looking into purchasing the f1.8,or f1.4 for low light capture, I own a Sigma f2.8 17-50mm. I realise the smaller f-stop number(f1.8) translates to a larger aperture opening, any guidance would greatly be appreciated. thanks in advance Bernard

Hi Bernard, You are asking for advice regarding which is better, f/1.4 vs.f/1.8. The f/1.8 is only just ½ f/stop slower, not much difference. Likely the f/1.8 will be just a smidgen sharper at maximum aperture (this is not a certainty) only because the f/1.4 requires a steeper curve applied at the edges of its slightly larger diameter glass. i.e. the f/1/4 is harder to make. Likely this is a decision that will be made by your pocket book. I have a Nikon 58mm f/1.4 and I love it. Best of luck,

Thanks Alan Your response on sharpness is very helpful relating to my future purchase. In regards to the 1/2 f/stop difference, in your opinion, would that make a large or small difference in Low light capture? weddings, banquets, ect.. Thank you

Actually, if the sigma is a constant 2.8, I would just use that. Since it's such a short focal length. But 1/2 a stop is a small difference. If you're too blurry at 1.8, 1.4 isn't going to help much.

The 2/3 stop difference between f/1.8 and f/1.4 may make the difference between blurry from camera or subject modtion (though depth of field will be shallower). Suppose shooting w/o flash with the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and you're getting an exposure of f/2.8 and 1/15 second. At f/1.8 you could get 1/40 sec., while at f/1.4 you could shoot at 1/60.

But practically any place that has electricity has enough light for 2.8 Unless this is case of only wanting low iso.

Thanks Greg, Jon The responses receive are really useful, at times I've managed a sharp image at 1/40 sec. but to be safe in this hopefully life time investment I'm going for the f/1.4, I'll be ready for next years NFL Rams championship after party.
