Help! Paintshop Pro vs Elements

I have almost always used Paint Shop Pro 8 to edit all of my digital images and have historically saved them as JPG. Recently, I decided to venture into shooting RAW images, therefore, needed to use my PS Elements(5.0) to view the NEF files. I've used Elements very little on previous images.

Here's where I discovered a problem. All of my images that I've previously worked on in Paint Shop Pro look awful when I pull them up in Elements. They are all JPG files and I tested this using only images that are in my BP gallery and in Elements they look "whacked out." I guess the best way to describe them is overly contrasty and noisy, almost like a posterize filter. In Paintshop Pro, all the images look like they do in my BP gallery, so there must be something going on with Elements. Again, I checked the file extension to make sure I wasn't pulling in a PSP .psd file. One other odd thing, the whiskers on animal shots look practically perforated or jagged in Elements, but not in PSP or my BP gallery.

Anyone know why this would happen? I appreciate any ideas or comments :)

ps - the only thing I've recently installed on my laptop is a Huey Pro and am very satisfied with the results. I didn't have this problem in Elements with any of the RAW files I recently shot.
