Photography Question

BP Community Rating/ Voting?

Here's a thought!
Some of the other Photography/Art website like Heelpress and ArtWanted have a voting system by the members. It seems to work well. Add a drop-down voting gage to the side of each comment box like Heelpress does. It's actually interesting to see what other artist feel about your work. With all the commotion and opinions about EP's maybe this will relieve some pressure. Just a thought.

Penny, in a perfect world, that might be a great idea, but other sites have tried and abandoned member voting because it became a Facebook Friends-type competition, basically a popularity contest.

  The Heretic responds again:

The fact remains that too many images are allowed to be submitted. It's the "condition" associated with digital cameras - it's just too easy to take a lot of exposures without any thought or planning in the hopes of getting one decent shot.

We see it with wedding photographers who think it's OK to take upwards of 2,000 shots at a wedding; we saw it in a thread wherein an amateur indicated she'd taken 35,000 images in about 2.5 years. But to what avail? She wants to buy a "bigger and better camera."

We, as members, really need to shoot down [harshly critique] many of the images submitted to the contest and other places in the site. The fact is, most of the submitted images just aren't that great. And, when a great one appears - it just may not receive appropriate recognition.

And who is going to be the first to tell mama that her little darling's photo sucks? Not I.

I'll be happy to do that - it's the curse of someone that agrees to critique images.

Once, again, we shouldn't be speaking about snapshots - these can be anything one wants. We should be speaking about images - pictures that do deserve assessment, critique, etc. And, that's always been my goal.

The site's mentioned are up and running and seem to be working just great! My only reason for suggesting such a method is to create a way for others to learn what is wrong or right with there image. Heelpress has a critique panel made up of members. It's great if you really do want to hear the truth. Of course it's optional. Working for me!

Penny, many people do not want to know what is wrong with their photos. I mean seriously. They just don't want to know.

Hi Sharon, I know. But for those of us that really do want to improve our skill at this form of expression, there are ways to create a system that allow's others to rate our work. Site I mention above, give the artist the choice if they desire a critique or not. Then there are ten honest questions. Again a choice as to which one's you want to answer or if you prefer just a strait across the line 1-10 rating. Both are available.
I find it a great way of finding out what other see that I may have missed.

I think that would be a cool idea if the member could choose to have that option or not.

Actually Sam I'm envolved with several different photography websites. Why not branch out? Sharing what is going on outside of BP is growth motivated nothing sinister. Just new ideas. Besides Jim and Denise and all the rest at BP are amazing people. They've been very helpful over the years. I had the opportunity to meet them all at the first and second BP summit meetings. They are a friendly bunch! That's why I'm here.
