Photography Question

Melissa McCabe

New Email option - anybody can save your images

Just tested this new "share photo with friend" feature (on one of my own images) and once the image is in my email... well it's not exactly safe and sound on the BP site anymore! I tried logging off and could do this from anybody else's image too.

Yes I'm aware there are image theives anyway - confused why BP would help them out? Why is this feature here? Might as well activate the right click / save...

I tested it too, and yup, once it's in email there is no disabling of the right click or any other protection - and the image is as big as it views in betterphoto...yikes.

If I remember correctly, they had a share this photo with a friend option, as a link to the site. But now the actual image is sent. I don't like the feature either and wish there was a way we can turn it off if we don't want the 'Share photo with a friend' option!

I emailed one by sharing option to myself to test.
What I received was a thumbnail size image and other blurbs about checking out BP, etc. and that is, IMHO, not really that big of a problem.

Do you all get the BP full size image?

I got a nice big juicy image - bigger I think than is displayed in my gallery.

For e-mailing purposes, I size my images down for 2 reasons - 1. Easier to send a smaller image (less than 200kb) so even my dialup friends can download the image - and 2. It may be viewable on the monitor but will not print very well. The images I have on BP are even too big for my taste to send out via e-mail. I also trust the people/friends I send my images to and if a customer wants to see them, that is what I have a website for.
You are never completely safe when images are displayed on the internet, even on BP you can do a screen capture to get an image but the resolution of this kind of capture would be a joke.
I trust BP more than any other site and although some people may find this new feature useful, I don't think I will be using it. I keep a folder of very small sized photos on my MAC desktop for quick access for e-mailing.
And you can also add your © 2007 Carlton Ward to any image you display anywhere.

Well, haven't tried the feature, but, is it just the image that you emailed that you can right on? Or does it make the rest of them that way?
Since you emailed it, that does free it up to be spread unlimitedly. And since that's the case, can you steal what you're actually giving out?
Besides, you'd have to make it clickable to make it go from a gallery to an email, wouldn't you?
I guess, only email from your computer.

"And you can also add your © 2007 Carlton Ward to any image you display anywhere."

Kinda defeats the purpose of taking pictures doesn't it?

The point is, anybody can email any image to anybody - it doesn't appear that you need to be a member, logged in, etc. etc.

It only sends the one image, which then you can save/redistribute. But it doesn't have to be your own image.

I responded on the other thread, and am hoping someone from BP will clarify this for us. I don't want the option and maybe we can have the option turned off. PLEASE!!!

On my computer running Windows Vista - I just tried right clicking on images from the contest entries. I got the normal copyright message, then when I closed out that message, I got the normal right click options and I am able to save any photo to my computer.

Using Windows ME - One can simply choose the send page by email method to send any photo.

Of course as mentioned there is the print screen method.

My point being your photos have not been safe from copying by those who know how even before the changes.

Yes, I agree Greg that adding the copyright to an image takes away from the art. I was just throwing out possible safeguards for e-mailing photos or displaying them online.

Greg, the best way to see the new feature is to go the the recent contest entries page. Click on an image and under each one, highlighted in blue, is the share with a friend by email option.

  Hi BetterPhoto friends,

I wanted to let you all know that we have made it so that the large photos only show in the email when a member shares his/her own photos through the Member Center's "Your Photos" page. If a visitor shares a photo via the gallery pages, the resulting email will only have the smaller, thumbnail version of the image, along with a link encouraging the recipient to click to come to BetterPhoto to view or discuss the photo.

It is true that the emails were using the big images at first, as our amazing, stunningly talented, and expert team of developers (okay it was me) were working out the bugs of this new feature.

Thanks for your support and constructive feedback. BP needs your help spreading the good word about our awesome community and site here. Please tell everyone you meet about BetterPhoto - friends, family, waiters, your doctor or dentist, the babysitter, and the people you meet while you're out making great images.

Happy New Year!

Thank you,
Jim Miotke

Jim, thank you for your hard (and quick) work, always.

I'm glad you clarified thumbnail vs. full size images... because I wasn't the only one who wasn't seeing what everyone else was seeing...

Thank you.

Well, I don't want it on mine. Can we get rid of the option? They steal enough as it is.

I just noticed I butchered my English...
I meant to say, I was the only one seeing the thumbnail images in the sent email message using the Sharing option.

I still say, thumbnail size images are no problem. It would be a good way to share your photos with your friends and family, prompting them to come to your gallery to view your photos.

Thanks all, and thanks Nobi for seeing how this is a great way to "share your passion for picture taking".

No, that's not an option, Carolyn.

What Carolyn said is true, they can still use the thumbnail on sites like flicker. I don't appreciate the feature unless there is no way they can right click and even copy the thumb nails. Please correct that. I may leave the site if it's not. They photos are mine and not for use any way shape or form without my permission and the site allowing the thumbnails even to be copied is not permitted by myself for this reason. I have no control over who is sending them out.

Also, there are programs that can enlarge thumbnails into decent size photo without loosing details. Please reconsider this option.

I remember we had a few BPers images showing up on Flikr a while back that caused quite a stir. I believe they were even being entered into contests under the thiefs name. As artists I think we all appreciate the time, investment & work that go into creating our work and its a shame we have to pay so much attention protecting our work. Its even worse in the music & DVD indusrty. This is just another reason I love my BP site. I feel better knowing that my images are right-click protected.
Greg, you went right over my head with the copyright remark. I get it now but to see where my brain was at - I typed © 2007 instead of 2008. I will hopefully catch up sometime this spring :)

What Carlton said happened to a couple of my images as well. I certainly didn't appreciate seeing my photos on Flikr under a photo thief's name.
I sent my protest email messages to Yahoo, but the response from Yahoo was that there weren't enough facts to do anything about it...

But also, it's a fact that there is no fool proof way to protect your images and my images from thieves on Internet site. If thieves want your photos bad enough, there are different ways to take your photos anyway...
It's the fact of WWW (world wide web) at current technology. So, to protect your images (currently) is to place a distinct watermark on your photos.

I just tried by sending my own to my e-mail and right clicked and saved as..it was just a big as the original. There are other ways to send the BP site to friends. This is not the way to conduct business..please turn off that option!!

Jim - I just tried this again - and it's still sending full size pics... I went to Mrs. G's free gallery - shared a pic with her - copy to myself... and I got the big size pic from her gallery... When she did the same - she got the full size pic and I got the thumbnail... All this done from the gallery - not the My photos...
It looks like the option is not turned on in premium galleries though - just free ones... Is that possible? Because it's not on my pics in my gallery... If yes, then why don't the people with free galleries have the same protection as Premium gallery owners?
BP should never have an option to forward a larger than thumbnail pic to someone... We need protection. We know that people can steal our pics through several different methods - but we would appreciate if BP would not help them along! If I want to share a pic with someone - I just e-mal them the link to the pic at bp...
Hope this gets settled quickly...
Thanks
