Photography Question

Transparency Scanner & Software

I'm considering buying an Epson 4490 Photo scanner for some medium format transparencies (2 1/4 up to 8x10). I have a PC with Windows Vista, & Photoshop CS3. I was told that a software like SilverScan or Silverfast Ai is what I need to use it as a plug-in for my Photoshop, and I'm wondering if anyone has any opinion or information regarding both. These transparencies are something I just inherited, and want to make prints of. I'll probably use a professional printing service, so no need to bother with printer issues. Thanks so much!

I use the V700 with the Epson software and like it fine, except that I don't think the Epson medium format film holders keep the film flat enough. I have a review of the V700 on this site and another on my web site.

If you decide on this scanner, or the 4490, go to betterscanning.com and buy the site owner's medium format negative holder. He has the holder for the 4490 as well.

  Kimberly,

I do not believe the 4490 supports any larger than 120/220 for film. The v700 & v750, however, can do up to 8x10 film.

BTW, the V500 supports the same sizes of film as the 4490, but higher resolution. Staples has them for $200.

Check Epson's refurbished lists for a good deal on a V700 -- they occasionally have them for ~$350.

  Thanks David,
I actually mis-typed and meant the 4990, which does 8x10. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one for sale anywhere since they have been discontinued. Thanks for the tips on the refurbished deals!
