Photography Question

Brooke M. Lewis

Anyone used Cafe Press or Zazzle?

I just recently learned about Cafe Press and Zazzle - wondering if anyone has used them and if so, what are your thoughts? I wouldn't use them to sell prints, rather products (mugs, mousepads, cards, etc). Thanks!

  Hi Brooke,

Instead of using a service like that, I use a stock-agency since the exposure is really high. You can read more on this section of my site: Hakimata Stock Portfolio.

I sell at both sites. Cafepress is very time consuming. You need to resize many of your photos to fit on the products. Zazzle is much easier to upload to.

Thanks Paul and Susan. I am already using some micro stock sites. Susan, do you find that your sales are good enough on those sites to justify the time put into it? I am intriqued, but I just am curious how profitable the venture is. Do you just use the free stores or did you upgrade to the premium? Thanks for your advice.

I have not had many sales at Cafepress. I have a premium shop and it is for the moment sustaining itself - meaning I have enough sales to cover the cost of the store. I really have not finished building the site properly, because it takes so much time. I have not decided yet whether I want to put in the time and effort to get it up to speed or close it. I do hear that some people sell well on the site, but it's mostly shirts and gift items. I tried to build my store using mostly framed prints.

I made calendars on lulu.com and cafepress.com to give as gifts this year. In all honesty I wasn't wild about either one but the Cafe Press calendars did seem slightly higher quality. However, they were quite expensive - $14.99 per calendar and people are selling them for around $19. I can buy a much, much higher quality BrownTrout calendar for $13 so as a customer, why would I buy one from a Cafe Press vendor? I use printroom.com for prints, mugs, mousepads, cards, etc and am happy with them, especially since they use the ICC profile embedded in the file while neither Cafe Press nor LuLu did. Unfortunately they don't do full calendars.

  Hi,

I've been using Cafepress for a while. I like the product quality and I have made a bit of money buying the products (especially calendars) myself and selling them to people I know or I have met randomly. You get a bulk discount if you buy 15 or more. What I don't like is that they charge a ridiculous amount for S&H. For 15 calendars I have to pay $20 Shipping and for 99 calendars that comes to $75 (absurd!). I only sold 3 items off their website, because there are literally millions of products, then again, I never did any advertising.

Brooke, I just recently started using vistaprint.com for my business cards. I had wall calendars of my photos made to give to my family as Christmas gifts and was thrilled with the quality and the fast delivery. Once you order they email you with offers for many free items. I got free business cards, 10 free magnet calendars, etc. I plan on using them extensively in the future. It's worth your while to check them out. Good luck. Kathy in NH

Thanks for all the input everyone. I put a couple items up for sale just before Christmas on Zazzle (a couple mousepads, a couple mugs, and a t-shirt). I have sold 1 mousepad thus far - not too impressive, but I really haven't put much time into it. I will checkout the other places you guys suggested. Thanks!
