Lens for Canon 30D

Hi all,

Been ages since ive been on here but I am soon to be a daddy so life has been keeping me very busy.

Ive got my 30D and 100mm macro, which I know is wonderful for portraits as well coz ive used it on my neice so many times, but im wanting a new lense with a bit more versatility for the new comer to my family.
I want to be able to take nice close ups/portraits, but also I guess the every day shots if you know what I mean, like in the hospital, with mum, leaving hospital coming home etc etc...

I dont want to spend a fortune on it, so im pretty sure the L lenses are out :((( .. but I seem to recall someone mentioning the 50mm once for this type of stuff. Im just not sure about it, it seems very small for a 30D with big battery grip as well. large unit and tiny little lense might be hard to work with?..
What about the 28 - 135mm?.. or 28 -105mm? ..

Anyhow, opinions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ben

The EF 50 f/1.8 II is too cheap and too sharp not to have. But 50mm is a moderately long portrait lens for the DSLRs that have sensors smaller than 35mm film frame, like the 30D. Best for general use on this camera is a zoom starting at 17mm or 18mm to get moderate wide angle. Usual suspects are EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 if on a very strict budget, otherwise one of EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II, Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC Macro, Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 DX, Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro, EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM.

Thanks so much Brenda :) hehe so exciting!!

And thanks Jon, very helpful indeed. I think I may go the last you mentioned, 17 -85. Ive just seen a pic of that lens on the camera and looks like a nice unit together :) thanks again

Best wishes to you Ben! :) I have heard that the 17-85 IS is very good. I have the 28-135 IS lens and use it almost all of the time. I love it!

  Thanks Amy...

I am tossing up between the 17-85 and the 28-135... its so difficult to decide.

The 17-85 is a bit more expensive, and im not sure is worth it...
most people ive spoken to that have the 28-135 say it stays on their camera 95% of the time, so maybe I should go that way.

Oh so confusing :S

The 17-85 on your DSLR is like the 28-135 on full frame/film camera. It is about the same price when I bought my 28-135 seven years ago for $500. Depending on what you shoot, the 28-135 may be too 'long' for you at 28mm, especially indoor. Hope this helps.
