Photography Question

Filter software

I have recently ordered CS3 for my photo editing/developing and I would also like to have some of the PS plug in software for the different advanced filters, such as glow, softener, etc.. the filters most commonly used for shots of babies and weddings. There seems to be so many out there, which is best? and/or any other advice?

Try them, combine them, play around with them, then discard most of them.
Keep what you like.
That's a matter of taste.
Your own.

Well my issue is that I don't want to waste a ton of time or money testing this or that, I'd rather just start from point of proven tests and methods. Then venture around from there.

Well, Amanda, others DID invest that much time and effort to develop their own (mark that: their OWN!) styles and m.o.'s.

If you copy that you would be blatantly stealing from them.
And you still wouldn't have a style of your own! You would still simply be a copycat (and artistic thief).
I don't think you want that.

Good luck!

Hold on a min. That's not what I was talking about. I was referring to software that is reliable and not some sort of scam.. You know, advertised one way works another if at all. THATs what I was referring to, not stealing someone else's work. Not copying another's STYLE. . I don't want to waste time looking into and/or paying for software that isn't any good. You know, becuase there are scams out there.

Thanks anyway though.

Go to the fredmiranda.com site and look at their plugins. I have used CSPro (which I like) and would like to try out the Velvia Vision plugin sometime in the furure. There are so many variables within Photoshop itself, that until you really learn your way around, you could be wasting your $$ on plugins. There are things like the "Orton effect" that uses a process in Photoshop to soften an image and give it a impressionistic & mystical glow. I cant tell you off the top of my head the process, but I have a cheat sheet somewhere. You can do a search for it right here on BP and probably find it. Gaussian blur, liquify, and other built in filters give you a vast array of options as well as using layers & opacity along with levels, curves, hue/saturation, contrast, selective colors, etc..
I took a course by Jim Zuckerman "Creative techniques in Photoshop" that was a great course and I hope to take his Advanced course sometime soon. He had us turning photos into paintings along with learning lots of other useful & creative tricks.
Lewis Kempers "Toolbox" classes are also great Photoshop classes.
My advice is to learn to use what you got and see if you need any plugins.

Your Welcome Amanda - and I just would like to add that I have been a musician & artist all my life and I have copied and learned from others but when combined with my own artistic vision and interpretation - it does become my own style and art.
I dont know your expertise level with Photoshop but I have been playing with it now for about 6 years and still feel there is so much more to learn. Thats why I love taking the classes here at BP. Along with learning more it also gives me a different perspective which grows new ideas and inspiration.

What Carlton said!

I am in the process of taking Jim Zuckermans "Creative techniques in Photoshop" class. I am only on lesson 4 & have learned so much. It is so much fun and well worth it.

I do use CS2 and use a filter that I like, it is very common, doesn't cost too much, if I remember correctly, maybe around 25.00. You can google the name it will bring you to their site.
Flaming Pear plug in. Flood is the one I use. I like it alot. The flower picture attached is a flood filter .

Another filter I bought is Mehdi plug in called Kaleidoscope. I have yet to produce a great image off it, but it is fun & another low cost one.

Amanda, I hope this helps. I highly suggest the class Carlton & I spoke about. It is learning how to do so many filters & techniques just with PS, without purchased filters.

Isn't Carlton just the nicest guy, and so very helpful!

I am including some of my assignment pictures from this class to give you an idea of what you learn in PS.

Have fun!
Mary
