Photography Question

Backgrounds

Simple questions:

- What Background stands are recommended? the deminsions: hight not less than 3m [~10' and above], width also not less than 3-3.5m.

I want to have muslin or canvas or any fabric/cloths, I know paper is most or popular used but I am not into replacing the paper all the time when getting dirt and collapsed [damaged], so I prefer to clean cloths or iron when wrinkles are there instead of papers as I know children will not keep it safe.

Also for dimensions of that background used, I want also the hight not less than 2.5-3m and width not less than 3m an for length it is ok if it is longer than 4m up to 10m if so, hehe, I think the hight is included as length, so if we consider the hight is about 3m then the rest should be 2-5m more.

About colors, what colors should I get? White and Black are must for some reasons but I may get more another colors if necessary, any recommendations?

About light gels, what gels should I get? and are they helpful or useful for background lighting sometimes? if so then give me links to those gels.

The budget is not a big problem but I hope I can keep all that stuff under $300 or if so under $500.

I may add more question about this topic later if needed.

Tareq

  Hi Tareq,
The best background stands are C-stands (century stands) with a single arm. You can get these from Bogen and Mole Richardson and other companies. The only problem with these is that they are expensive and heavy. There are also background stand, made for this only, not as stable but easier to carry (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/14755-REG/Da_lite_42082_Da_lite_Deluxe_Background_Stand.html).
I would get a gray background, a dark gray. I can change the color of this pretty easily with gels. I would get a lot of gel colors warm and cool. I must have 50 of gels, it is nice to have choice.
Thanks, John Siskin

  Hi John,
Thank you very much for your response.
Is your recommendation or response depend on experience or what you hear and read?
I know you are an expert in lightings and Studio stuff, but sometimes replies are users recommendations more than general scientific/technically replies, so I will buy dark grey background with white and black colors as main colors, and I will use gels for changing colors of background or making colorful effects, but what background type you advise me to get, Muslin, Canvas, or Papers?

Now about stands, I was thinking to get one from the following links:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/437786-REG/Impact_3046_Background_Support_System_.html

What do you think about them? anyone of them? none of them? something else, waiting your answer.

  Tareq,
Tis is the one I use for my home studio, works great:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/95209-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_2960D_Complete_AutoPole_2_Expan_Kit.html

Has the legs for travel:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5677-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_5994_Bases_for_AutoPoles_.html

But it is big and some what heavy, so for travel I use:

I hope this helps,
Debby

  Hey Debby,
thank you very much

I was looking at Bogen stand but it is little over priced, even I can afford it but I was thinking of another alternatives which can be cheaper but good quality or sturdy enough for heavy duty photographing.

about DaLite brand I don't know why I don't like it, so I never look at it, I was thinking more about the last link I posted or that Impact brand, but seems people here including you and John prefer DaLite or another brands.

I heard from different websites people talking about PVC home-made stands, so I will check if that method is good enough to try.

  Hi Tareq,
I have often used C-stands in the studio and on location, they are heavier and go up higher than regular background stands. I have put a 12 foot wide seamless on C-stands, you couldn’t do that with a regular background stand. If you plan a permanent studio installation I would use something else, like the Bogen/Manfrotto system.

I often use a gray muslin, mine is more of a middle gray than a dark gray. Given the work I have done with this background I would buy something darker next time. There are pictures with the background in my gallery, often the color is changed with a gel. I would use seamless paper for your white, since it can be made smoother and can be thrown out. I suppose I would use muslin rather than canvas for everything else. Muslin can be draped easier than canvas. I have used both.
Thanks, John

  Tareq,
I know you wrote me about some things so please forgive me that I don't remember if you have my Cds or not.
If so the PVC instrctions are in there.
If not email me back and I'll see if I can send them to ya, will be a bit busy this weekendbut I'll try asap.
Have a great day,
Debby

I think have to think about John recommendations as I am going to do permanent studio for a while and not thinking for on location yet.
I will get muslin, I don't like papers even I worked with paper before and they gave me excellent results but so easy tears and crashed when working with children, and get dirt and difficult to clean or wash.
