Photography Question

Susan Fox

Design of Editor's Pick Button

So as not to take over the EFP watch thread I thought I'd start a new one on the design of the button.

I love BP, but these EFP buttons clutter up the galleries, sorry but they do. I no longer sending peopleto my gallery here. They were getting confused about all the buttons and what they meant. One even asked me if it was a scam, where everyone gets a button. So I had to find a new place to host my photos to show potential clients.

I see nothing wrong with people knowing their images made it into runners up. It's a thrill to know that your photo at least made it to the first round. But to give a medal for the first round of a contest still doesn't make sense to me.

But before anyone yells at me, I am not saying EFP should go away, just PLEASE begging BP to redesign the "medal" and also make it an option to turn them off in a gallery.

I think a very small star next to the title (Not under the photo) would be nice. This way it would not compete with the finalist/win/grand buttons.

Whatever they do is fine by me...it's their site and if we don't want what they do, Then we can go elsewhere...if we look for the bad in a situation....we will sure find it...and the gold buttons are not silver looking like the finalist or winners except the POD and really, we all can read and all the medals say exactly what they are for. There are so many more important things in life....especially in this season.Complaining kept a lot of people in a wilderness for a very long time...I am not going to stay there forever....I think BP does a fine job at what they do....really, they prolly don't get paid all that much anyways.....I will be happy either way...buttons....no buttons..whatever....I just like getting the help I get here and I have improved greatly because of the wonderful photographers here...they can't make EVEYONE happy ALL the time!

Ok your vote Amber is to keep it as is, not complain and that there are more important things in life.

Well my thought is that if no one ever complains about anything then nothing ever changes. I am not suggesting we storm the BP offices with pitch forks and torches if they don't change the button :-)

They mentioned themselves they were looking into changing the look of the button. All I'm doing is bring it to the forefront again to see where that stands.

If BP came out and said "we are not changing the button" then it would be over and done with. But they haven't said that, so it would seem the subject was still open for debate and discussion.

And yes, I am fully aware there are more important things in life. But since this is a site about photography and a great photography contest. Then discussions, debates and complaints will all be related to that topic and not, for example, world peace.

So summing up, that is one vote to change the button and one vote to leave the look of the button as is.

I love the EP awards. Some love them and some hate them so I won't debate that, but I do think it would be nice if they were designed a little differently OR at least had a different color. I am not familiar with the color of ribbons at a state fair but I have always thought it would be nice if the medals had different colors reflecting their importance.

I totally agree there are more important things in life than worrying about what the EP buttons look like but here I am sitting in front of a monitor expressing my opinion when I could be worrying about the dishes in my sink LOL.

Why are you complaining about the EFP button and not the finalist button? Should they make the EFP button a light blue to match the silver finalist button? Oh yeah, Amber Amen.

Well, yes, I have to agree that this isn't an earth-shaking problem, but then again, we all spend many hours working to take our photos and then to get them to their very best presentations. I do like the idea of the EPs. They give me an idea of where I am in the contest through the month, and, as you say, Susan, that isn't the question here. The design is. I do think that the EP notifications should be (1) quite a lot smaller amd (2) not gold, which traditionally is a winner's color. If we're going to have silver as the finalist color, it only makes sense to have gold as the winner color. (Now that overall color scheme could be changed, however, to something else--but the point is--winners one color, finalists another, and EPs yet another and considerably smaller). To have gold for EPs doesn't make any kind of intuitive sense, nor does their present size in relation to finalists and winners. For EPs then--perhaps a small star (perhaps blue?) with a small "Editor's Pick" as has been suggested. I've also heard mentioned a little pushpin image with an EP designation. One could even use a check mark, which would reflect what some editing programs do when you put a tag on a photo. This, in fact, is what's actually happening here. They're being "tagged" to continue into the next contest round. Mitch

I'm with you, Mitch (and Susan)! Keep the EP as a feature, but change the design, and everyone keep taking pictures... :)

(Mitch, you may be thinking of my own pushpin design, submitted as a thread post here on BP when the medallions first appeared this summer. I always liked that little sketch for an idea! ;)

Why don't we all just complain about each other then the EP buttons won't be an issue ;).

Kathleen why would I complain about the finalist button? That doesn't make sense.

The EFP button is gold and looks just like a WINNER button. All I'm suggesting is to change the EFP slightly. I didn't realize that was such an earth shattering request :-)

And I've already stated that if BP doesn't want to change and says as much, then fine no big deal.

Oh and by the way I know there are more important things in life, as I already stated. Photography helps me get my mind off some very difficult things I currently have to deal with day to day. So yes I probably worry and complain too much about a silly button and contest.

Yep, Chris, I am definitely thinking about your pushpin design. Just ran right smack out of my head whose it was for a moment. :)

Susan I am a new member to this site and I was just gratefult to even get an EFP button. I know that you are a very good photographer I love your photos. I was just thinking that it was a small thing to complain about. I did not mean to offend anyone. I am sorry that you are having difficulties in your life. If you are not happy with the color that is your perogative. I from now on will stay out of these chat sessions. I apologize.

Kathleen, first off, welcome to BP! 2nd these forum discussions can get a bit touchy sometimes. You just have to roll with the punches, no reason to stay away. There are only one or two members I would be afraid to meet on a street corner :o) and there are a few like me who are ok but aren't too graceful at relating their thoughts without coming across as somewhat blunt.

I understand what Susan is talking about when she would like to see the EP buttons designed differently. They are the same color and design as a 1st or 2nd place win. It does seem to lessen the impact when looking at a gallery to see all the gold emblems only to realize they are for photos that have only made the first round of judging.

BTW, I love them! That may be because I seldom win anymore and just like to know my photo was at least looked at, but I'm in the camp where they need a new design.

I am not trying to take anything away from those who like getting the buttons. I don't want BP to stop with the buttons. Just to change the look a bit, that is all.

I honestly didn't think it would upset people to suggest a change in the look.

And I agree, it is a small thing to complain about. But others had talked about asking for a change. I just moved it out of the EFP tracking tread so it wouldn't pull that talk off topic.

Kathleen I'm sorry if I am came off too argumentative and defensive, but I felt like I was being "attacked" for suggesting a change and not having proper life priorities.

Yikes! How the heck did this get so far off topic :-( I think that this is the last time I start a topic.

Susan, you have a supporter in me... I think your idea to start this was a good one... I'm sure your motivation was to nudge BP to do what they already suggested they were, a redesign of the medal... When the EFP started, many members loved em' many members hated them... I have said all along that the BIG FLASHY GOLD button was too much for an image that simply made it from the 1st round... That means... the image got an EFP like 20,000 others this month...:) Which is around what I am figuring since about 1/2 used to make it through... It's not a big enough deal for this huge medallion.. And again, I still think it's silly to have a big bright GOLD equally big button under my image that days EFP, then have it taken away to be given a lesser color like silver... That's the wrong direction in the medal colors guys!!...lol In the end, BP will run it the way they want, I too have come to like knowing what got their attention... But I do want the design change, that many of us have hopes for...:)
Which is all Susan was suggesting here I think...:) Again, this topic seems to be as controversial as politics...lol..
I'll shut up now before I make BP enemies...:)

Susan, I did not mean for you to feel like you were being attacked. I was merely as a newbie shocked that one would want to change the EFP. Like I said I was just grateful to get an EFP. I am new to photography. I have only been shooting about a year or so, and new to BP. So it was my bad and not yours. I really do not want to start out on the wrong foot. I am not all that eloquent and graceful in my expression either. (I have been working for lawyers to long). But anyway, again I apologize and hope that I have not offended to badly. I came to BP because someone told me that this was a great site to learn from and I have learned alot and browsed your gallery Sharon's gallery and many more. I hope to develop and mature as a photographer so that I may be as good as you guys are.

Kathleen I apologize too :-) Please don't go. BP is a great site with lots to offer.

The EFP buttons are a hot topic as of late and each side has their opinion; no one is right or wrong.

If someone likes the look of button then this was the place to say so and why. Or if you don't like the design to say that and why.

I understand that now. I am not going anywhere, I'm having fun. I love to look at other peoples photos to learn to improve on my own. I went to Bushkill Falls this past weekend and got some nice waterfall shots. Maybe you would like them. Take a look if you like. I value your opinion.

I vote for a change in the design...simple, different color. Folks have been suggesting that from the get go, cause they do blend in with the other medals. And post them at the same time that finalists are posted. Simplifies all the "EFP Watch" threads. Heck, you could even call them Runner UPs. :-)

I too agree that BP should, if nothing else change the EFP's color...maybe a bronze shade. Just my HO.

I'm not sure how difficult it would be to change the color of the EFP and how it would affect the EFPs already showing.

My vote would be for a white background because there is enough shading in the design that it would still show up - but not be as obvious as a Finalist or Winner.

Well, let's hope I don't make any BP enemies with my post, but I am with Susan in saying that it could appear the contest is a scam if someone comes as a new member or if you are sending someone to the site and they begin to sift through several albums and see that almost everyone has a lot of EFPs. Not to mention what it looks like if they see several of the EFPs that make us all scratch our head and ask why. I have seen several such images with obvious problems that made me wonder how they got in the EFP pool. I have several thoughts on the EFPs, but have been afraid to say anything for fear that I would find my head on a chopping block. But here goes, first, why did BP decide to honor the first cut of images with EFPs? Why didn't they choose to give the EFPs to those that made it to the round right before finalists are chosen or even the round before that one? Why give it to roughly half of the entries submitted each month? If they are giving 10-20,000 per month, soon everyone's gallery will be filled with EFP badges. Then of course, people will start eliminating their non-EFPs first as their gallery gets full, and this will leave only EFPs in most galleries. If I went to a site, looked through 20 or 25 galleries, and saw an award on most every image, I would start to think it was a scam. So if they gave out EFPs at finalist time on images still standing right before the finalists were chosen, there would be less EFPs in everyone's gallery so it didn't appear that everyone who enters gets a medal (and if they did this, I wouldn't expect BP to put up a new category showcasing the EFPs along with the finalists, but they could still have the feature where you can click if you want and see EFP winners). The other idea I thought of was to give the EFPs as they are doing now (but with a design change) so that people are encouraged to see they at least made the first cut. Then on the day they announce finalists, have them reset (so they disappear). This way, there are not hundreds of EFPS in everyone's galleries. Many people have free galleries and can only display 30 images and have to rotate them so that many of their EFPs aren't visible anyway. Those of us with premium galleries can only display 300 images and so we will soon have to uncheck EFPs so they are not visbile either. So if they were only there for the month, we would still know which ones to look at again as a possible resubmit, and new members would get encouragement that they were indeed on the right track. And there would almost always be some EFPs in most people's gallery at any time in case they wanted to send a friend or client over to look at their gallery and be able to see that they had been reconized by BP. Just my thoughts...no throwing rotten tomatoes! :)

I like the idea of a re-design of the EP button.

The Grandprize, 1st Place, 2nd place could be gold, silver, bronze with the EFP button being blue or white as suggested. It would be easier to tell them apart.

Just my thoughts... :)

I agree that a redesign of the EP recognition would be a good idea; both aesthetically and in fairness to the 1st Place Winners, 2nd Place Winners and Finalists. Since they already have different colors for winners and finalists, why not continue with that president? Otherwise, just make them all the same color and let the viewer struggle to see the difference.

My 2 cents.

I'm with Susan on the idea of a simple red, blue or whatever color star next to the image title. (it works)

Teacher says it's very nice...now go show mommy. LOL! (keeping it light)

Yep, I agree.. it should be smaller or something. It actually looks bigger than the winner buttons, I think because the print is bigger. Anyway another vote for what Susan said!
