Weekly photography challenges anywhere?

I'm a BP class addict, I'm afraid. This time I decided to do a Photoshop class, which I really need. But I'm going through photo withdrawals! :)

Are there any sites that have weekly photo challenges? Something to get me out trying new things?

I like the contests here, but I'd like to find something that I try new techniques along with way, without feeling like I have to come up with an outstanding contest photo. (Of courese, it's always nice if that happens!)

Sooooo let me get this straight...You have an addictive personality you decided to focus your addictions on you camera...hereby getting the attention away from any other addictions you may have? Now your looking for a site, other than this one, that has competitions on a weekly basis that welcome your addictions and will allow you to experiment with different techniques you learn from your BP classes. They'll have competitions that are easier to win so you won't have to enter Outstanding Photos to get an award???? Pat, I'm sorry to say that in the world today, where my daughters swim league has 7th place ribbons (I never new they had 4th place in my day) Better Photo will NEVER reward Mediocrity (only the Editor's will do that on occasion if you compliment them) so we're forced to find alternatives....alas the answer is No Pat....No...now grab that camera and practice...or whatever else you're addicted to and blame the relapse on BP's tough competition.

  Hello Pat,
You can google photo contests and find alot of them. I have tried a few & stick with BP. I also check to see if the photo on other sites can be right clicked and saved full resolution. Most of them can, which is why I would never post on their sites. I try to protect my photos from being stolen although a friend told me it would happen someday no matter what.
Even though you are taking a photoshop class, still go out & get new shots. I am also taking a photoshop class & love to shoot. It's nice to practice your new learned techniques on new photos. At this moment, it is 5:20 am, and my camera bag is in the car to go get sunrise pics. What I am saying, you dont really need an online contest to excel. Challenge yourself and get out and shoot as much as you can. Try something different, maybe nature, sunrise/sunsets, architecture, people. Surely there is something new you can try.
I hope this helps get you out to shoot.
Happy Shooting,
Mary

Very funny, Oliver! No, I'm not looking for contests! I'm looking for weekly challenges. I don't even want to upload my results. I just want to find somewhere that basically gives me a list of ideas to go out and try.

I'm not looking for awards for mediocricy. Sorry it came across that way. I'm looking for ideas/techniques to try, therefore learn.

I'm missing the the photo assignments from my photos classes that I've done the past almost year. I really enjoy the weekly "go do this". It's motivating, and I learn tons. The assignments from the class I'm taking now are photoshop assignments. (Which I need and want.) Maybe I should have signed up for 2 BP classes. Although that gets a little pricey.

Does this make sense? Sorry I came across as a wimpy wanna-be!!!

While not being disloyal to BP-I understand that you would like weekly challenges. There is a site called Photography Corner that gives out weekly challenges. When you're learning it is good to gather information from all possible sources. Take a look. You may find what you're looking for!

Hi Pat – Like you, I am also something of a class addict here at BP. I have taken classes (non-photography) on other sites, but really like how they do things here. Reading your original post, I did not see anything that made me think that you were asking for recognition of mediocrity, but maybe I missed something. Anyway, I rarely am at a loss for ideas of what to photograph; however, I travel a lot for my work – freelance writer – and see so many interesting things that I manage to keep my camera humming. Right now I am in Northern Minnesota working on a job and loving the amazing beauty up here. Having said all of this, I also keep looking for other formats in which to share and be inspired. One of the things I most like about the classes here is how students get inspired by other students and how we all learn together. I always miss this when the class is over. A weekly topic idea would be interesting and allow some of this sharing to continue. Maybe we could think of a way of doing this right here at BP. Any ideas, anyone?

Irene

Mary & Samantha - thanks very much for your input and suggestions. I appreciate it.

Hi, Irene! We were in a class together a few classes back - macro photography, maybe? I love your work.

I think it would be wonderful if BP had weekly topics - no judging, no voting - just some ideas and motivation.

I own and operate my own business from my home, which keeps me very, very busy. And keeps me indoors too much. I try to get out at least each weekend to shoot some pictures.

And thanks for your comments about my original post! I think Oliver must have hit the forums before his morning coffee this morning. :)

Pat, What about starting a topical club exactly for this purpose? Members could contribute ideas for a weekly topic, technique or theme and then share the photos in the club gallery. I think a lot of us would be up for a motivational challenge. Just a thought.

WOW Judyann – what a wonderful idea! I’m sitting here in my motel room waiting for the rain to stop and the fog to life before heading out and thought I’d check in at BP. Your terrific idea has made my day! I actually had not, before now, visited the club area of the forum. Starting an idea-a-day/week club would be great! We could post our images for review by other members, something that I, personally, would find helpful. No contest, no judging, just thoughts and sharing. I’m very lucky in that my work allows me to be outside much of the day and to follow my dreams of writing and doing photography, but I do miss the opportunities that classes provide by having weekly assignments and feedback by fellow students.

Pat, thanks for the compliment! The macro class was fun and very helpful, wasn’t it? That class, along with all the others, is what brought me to this point of wanting to recreate the sharing part of the classes.

Irene

I didn't know anything about the clubs. This is a wonderful idea!

I'll take a look this evening and get up to speed on clubs. I love the idea!

If someone wants to jump in and start, don't wait on me. Otherwise, I'll take a look tonight.

  I actually think it's a fun Idea!
There have been threads started to do this they hang around for sometime and then go away.
I do think it would be fun however to do one per week.
what ever was shot for the subject had to be done that week.
those type of games keep the mind Very sharp!

Good luck with this,
Debby

Absolutely a great idea! Minor "fairness" rules would keep this a fresh, fun, and innovative way to challenge us all! Please invite me to your club Pat!

When it rains/snows and the fog/haze is too heavy to make working practical, I end up spending lots of time in motel rooms being really bored. Therefore, I’ve been thinking about the idea of a club for all of us who want to explore “weekly assignments”. I visited the club section, but did not see how to set up a new club. I suspect it is as simple as e-mailing BP and asking to establish one. So…I came up with some ideas, see if these resonate with anyone and please add your ideas:

Intro: this is a club for anyone who enjoys the idea of a weekly challenge or assignment. Each week (beginning on Sunday) a new theme will be posted on the club site. This theme may encompass a compositional effect such as line or contrast; a lighting technique; a subject field such as trees and flowers or perhaps an emotion or feeling. Each member will post his/her best images by the following Sunday and provide a very brief synopsis of the image – tech details and perhaps a very short sentence about the chosen subject. Other members will critique the image and offer feedback on submitted images.

Some rules:

1. This is not meant as a contest and there are no awards other than enjoying sharing and learning from one another.
2. Please post only 2 (is this too many or should it be only 1?) image a week
3. Please include as much tech detail as you can so that we can learn from each other
4. When offering feedback/critique, keep in mind that every one of us, no matter what level of experience, started at the same place; barely knowing which way to hold the camera. Disrespecting another photographer’s work is not only rude but against the spirit of this club. We are all here to encourage one another, to share and to learn.
a. Some guidelines for critiquing:
b. Very short critiques such as “this is nice” or “not great” are not helpful and should be avoided
c. A good format for helpful critique might be: a couple of sentences about what you like followed by a couple offering suggestions or alternatives for the photographer to try.
d. Rudeness will not be tolerated! Please be honest, but also be kind and supportive.

What do you think? And, Pat: do you want to contact BP about how to set up a club or do you want me to do this?

Irene

Irene, I would go with one image/week. To start a new club, go to your member center. Click on clubs and there should be a link to start a new club.

Irene, I'm so glad that you've been stuck in the hotel! It's our gain!! :)

I don't know if this needs to be in the guidelines, but I would also like to be able to ask questions about the photo - so I can learn from what other's do.

If you are still stuck in the hotel and bored, and want to set up the club, go ahead. I love what you've put together.

If you don't have time or prefer I do it, I'll take care of it probably this evening.

  Here's the club!

http://www.betterphoto.com/Clubs/Default.asp?id=6979

Please go join!

The intro & guidelines are all part of the charter, but it isn't formatted pretty. Is there a way to make a post "sticky", so that it stays at the top? If so, I'd like to duplicate the intro/guidelines in a sticky post so it's easy to find and easy to read. It would also be nice to make the current challenge a sticky each week so it is readily available.

Now....we need a list of challenges. Since this is the first week, I'm thinking we could post one now, and then begin the rotation a week from this Sunday.

Do you want to send challenge suggestions to me (or someone else), so we have one updater each Sunday?

Will the weekly challenges be events or discussions? I'm new to clubs, so I'm not sure how it works.

I created a notice with the intro/guidelines, but now see I have the same info in the charter. Is there a way to edit (format) a charter that is already created? If so, I'll clean that up, and then try to delete the notice I created.

Sorry...I'll get this hang of this, I promise!

Wow Pat! Great job on setting up the club! No worries about the duplication of material. I am sure that all of us will get the hang of things soon and be able to have an exciting and fulfilling club. Here are a few possible topic ideas that occurred to me:

Bountiful harvest – images depicting the end of season crops or products in farmers markets, orchards, etc.

Fall Colors – changing leaves, ripe apples, pumpkin patches, etc.

It’s a small world – macro images depicting the change of seasons. This might include images representing summer into fall, or for those in the southern Hampshire, spring into summer.

Ghosts, goblins, monsters and tricksters – the images of Halloween
