nateral sidelighting

I am tring to understand sidelighting 45 degree and 90 degree (nateral). Does the sun come in at a 45 and 90. If not how does that work. and what would be the best time of day for 45 degree and 90 degree sidelighting.

Thanks Joe

Hello Joe,

It is just as it says; Light from the side.

Think of a compass. North is zero degrees, South would be 180 degrees.
At right angles the compass would read either 90 or 270 degrees.

If you face north and the light is coming also from the north, that is (front lighting)

Continue to face North but the light is from the South, that would be rear lighting which would probably produce a silouette.

"Side lighting" can be anything between these two extremes, although portrait photographers generally place the lights somewhere in the 45 degree range...(Rembrandt Lighting)

I'll try to draw you a diagram that might illustrate this better.

all the best,

Pete

Hey Joe? Do you happen to know somebody named Frank Luongo?
