Camera for time lapses? Hi all, I bought a D80 about 2 months back and have been playing with it almost daily trying to learn new things hone my photography skills. I met one guy at a conference in Canada who does time lapses. I liked the idea a lot but I do not want to use my D80 fir this purpose for the fear of wearing out the shutter. I am planning to buy a point and shoot for the purpose. I can do it only after about 5-6 months from now as I have been running negative bank balance after buying the D80 :p but I want to make sure that, when I have some savings, I know exactly which camera to buy. Which of the point and shoot camera would you suggest? What about Canon S3-S5 IS? or Canon G7-G9? or Sony H7-H9? as compared to Nikon coolpixs? As far as I've read till now, Canon has really nice software support for controlling the camera from computer. I could not find anything for Nikon. The gphoto software in Linux supports Nikon SLRs but am not sure about point and shoots. Any suggestions, explanations and pointers will be great help for me. Thanks a lot!! http://picasaweb.google.com/tulasinandan/

I would not be concerned with wearing out the shutter of your D80. Use it to capture the pictures you want. If/when it fails, it is a relatively inexpensive repair, less than the cost of the point & shoots you're looking at. Nikon's optional software, Camera Control Pro, can control the D80 tethered to a computer to do time lapse photography.

I'm with Jon. The D80's shutter has probably been tested to a minimum of 100,000 actuations. It is SUPPOSED to be used a lot. That's (partly) what you paid for. You might as well use it then, wouldn't you say? And if image quality is in any way important, you'll NEED an SLR. Have fun!
