Photography Question

Shirley L. Todd

Reprints

My daughter recently had her senior photos done and we were thrilled with most of the photos. However, one in her portfolio had bumps from tape they had used underneath and another one had a spot on it. The photos themselves were gorgeous. The photographer has reprinted the photos twice now through his lab, and both times the photos were fuzzy and faded coloring. They are blaming the lab and will keep trying. After 3 trips of 40 minutes we are frustrated and not sure what the problem is. My husband is going to call the owner and we would appreciate any advise you could give. The photos are digital. Thanks, Shirley

Have the photographer give you a jpeg or tiff file and view them on your monitor to see if they are fuzzy and faded. Fuzzy indicates out of focus and cannot be corrected. Faded probably can be corrected but indicates that whoever is doing the printing is either getting an undersaturated file or does not know how to print. A print is significantly different than viewing a file on a monitor and requires a lot of attention to make sure you get acceptable results.

Thanks for the advise. The first prints of these 2 photos from the photographer were awesome. They were crisp and full of color, however he has had them reprinted through the same lab twice now and each time they are fuzzy and faded. Does this mean his lab is to blame? It seems to me that reprints would be almost identical to the original. 2 other photos that were originally fuzzy and faded were corrected by the lab, but it seems they took 2 awesome photos and made them mediocre. I have been trying to educate myself on the digital process, but am confused. My husband plans to talk to the owner of the studio, and we just want to know what we should tell him to get the problem fixed. Thanks again, Shirley

The problem could be either the original file or the lab. Have the photographer show you the photo on his monitor. If it looks good then it is probably the lab. In any event, since he chose the lab the problem is his and he needs to work with them to get acceptable prints.
