New To Colorado Springs

I'm not quite sure if i'm asking this question in the right forum but ill ask anyway. first off I'm in the air force and just got stationed in Colorado springs and wanted to know of some good areas to go shoot at? and secondly I've been working on a laptop since I came into the military and am not quite sure how my photos look to everyone else since I have to deal with screen tilt and such. if any of you wouldn't mind taking some time to look at the photos in my gallery, and just giving me some feedback I would sure appreciate it. hopefully I'll get a flat panel monitor soon. sincerely ~Evan Mcmullen

First, and foremost, thank you for your service to our country!

I haven't been to the Springs in years and really envy you for being there. It is a beautiful place. I would suggest you check out Garden of the Gods for one place. Also, take some of the back roads into the mountains and you will find some great places to shoot - like the road to Cripple Creek if I remember correctly. Also, the highways to Silverton and Ouray offer some fgreat scenery.

Your photos look fine. All photos posted here are really reduced in size so I wouldn't worry about that.

I would like to offer a couple of suggestions. Stop placing the horizon in the middle of the frame. Either place it higher, with more foreground in the picture, or lower. Also, try to get some object, like a tree, large rock, pretty girls, etc. in the foreground and use a small f/stop with your lens set at hyperfocal distance to get it all in focus. Then, focus on your foreground subject and let the background fade to out of focus. Experiment and see which you like best.

Go Falcons! 3-0, and looking good!

Garden of the Gods is a great place. Someplace I have been meaning to go, but haven't made it yet, is Paint Mines. Lots of hoodoos and painted hills.

If you have a little more time, it isn't that far to hop on hwy 24 over to South Park. And of course, Pikes Peak.

As for what Kerry mentioned, the Rule of Thirds can help.

Evan, depending on what you like to shoot there are opportunities all over there. In the next 2 to 3 weeks fall colors will be really popping in Colorado. Within a few hours you can be in the middle of it. Mueller State Park in half an hour away, it's full of elk and the aspen should be ready any time now. Head to Cripple Creek and Victor if you like Ghost Towns. The San Juans are a photographers dreams. My favorite place is Ashcroft, a ghost town in the Aspen area. You better get there soon if you want the autumn colors.

I'm not sure how far you want to venture, but Rocky Mountains National Park at Estes Park is wonderful. You will see a lot of wildlife up close. There are many beautiful mountain lakes and streams and of course the mountains. This is one my favorite places to visit.
