S1 is flickering in LCD & Hand Symbol


Canon PowerShot S1 IS, flickering and small box in the middle of LCD monitor with white outlinES and with a ( ) hand symbol in side these marks. Canon says they don't know what is wrong and to UOS it in. Can someone help us? Thanks

This is the symbol for the IS (Image Stabilization) feature, and it is displayed when the IS is in effect. See p. 29 of the manual.

Not sure about the flicker, but a wild guess is that you are seeing it indoors, where the lights are powered by alternating current. The light bulbs essentially light up and dim at ~60 cycles per second. This is not perceived by our eyes, but the video of the LCD is composed of about 30 frames per second and the individual frames are capturing the bright and dim ends of the cycle.

  when we use to turn it on you would see the subject in monitor now that all we see what I posted and if we try to take a picture nothing shows up.......

  If there is no display in the viewfinder, and pressing the Display button to cycle through the options does not activate the LCD, then it is malfunctioning and you should send it to Canon (or other competent service agent) for repair.
