35MM Camera for Beginner

My 14 year old daughter has expressed a strong interest in photography and she will be taking her first photography class at the School of Visual Arts this fall. For the course, she needs a 35MM camera with both manual and automatic settings.
I've looked around on the internet and it seems that a Canon or Nikon is the best bet. I can't afford to spend too much money at this stage. Anyone have any advice or suggestions for a camera that would be good for the course?

Thanks

Take a look at KEH.com, a reputable used camera broker. Call a sales rep and explain your need to them. An advantage to dealing with KEH is that all their used cameras have had the mirror bumper foam and the light seals on the film door replaced. KEH is honest and they offer a 14-day return policy.

Older manual focus cameras, such as the very cheap and very reliable Canon TX, may require a battery that is no longer available. You might request one that uses a newer battery, or ask me about workarounds for the oldies.

The lens should be a 50mm. This will be both the cheapest alternative for a lens, and will most likely be of the best optical quality.

My web site is geared to students, so she might find it useful. Also, look for the Time-Life photograhy series at flea markets and yard sales.

Gosh... I'd pick up an Olympus OM-2. What a great camera and you can get them with the Zuiko 50/1.4 lens (a fantastic lens) for well under $200.

Or, if you can find one at a reasonable price, the Nikon FE2 is another great choice.
