Photography Question

Judy Kaplan

How to choose proper category for photo contest.

When entering a contest sometimes it is hard to choose a category. Any guidlines and suggestions would be helpfull on the following categorys, Photojournalism/Documentary, Portrait , Commercial Work or Advertising or even Editorial work would include.
Art work is always subjective but when is a photo of a person a Portrait and not a Documentary? And for that matter portraits may also include pets or animals.
Then of course there is that Travel category!!!!and the list goes on.

Hi Judy. Be sure to check out the Contest Menu option here on BP---there is actually a set of guidelines written by BP, for users, describing the categories, and suggesting what is appropriate for them. With 10 categories, there's plenty of room for personal interpretation in every one of them, and you will often find that any single image of yours could fit into more than 1 category quite easily; it is of course, up to you to choose.
If you've got a photo you strongly believe in, that fits more than one, remember that you can always re-enter it another month, in a different category that seems fitting.
One other note to keep in mind about the contest; BP had a record 39,988 entries for August. They historically have selected in the neighborhood of just 3% to make it to Finalists each month! It is inevitable that great photos will get overlooked, given the vast quantity coming in!

Judy, I hate to say this after Chris explained it so well, but I honestly don't think it makes much difference. I saw a winner of people walking in the rain in the N&L category in June of this year. While rain is an element of nature I would have thought that particular photo would have worked better in the People category. I just don't sweat the category.

Thanks for your responses. I will look into the guidlines for BP contests.

I was looking to enter contests from different photo magazines and some of the categorys are very broad like people or nature or archetecture. But when it comes to photojournalism or documentary this seems very broad but at the same time very specific.

It is easy to enter BP contest-no charge and you can enter all you want in any category but when you are spending 10 dollars per entry and some of the judging is based on the category selected you want to be resonable sure of what you are doing. Even though it is still objective.
