Photography Question

Adobe Elements

Does anybody know what a "scratch disk" is? I am running out of hard drive space, which hopefully will be remedied soon. However, I just started getting messages in Elements that a function could not be executed because the scratch disks are full. Neither Compaq nor my technology support partner knows. Thank you.

A scratch disk is a hard drive dedicated to Elements (or Photoshop) where it can put temporary image information while it performs calculations. Several things may be causing that error, but usually it will mean that the hard drive assigned to scratch is filling up and you have little space left on it. You seem to be aware of the problem. By default, the scratch drive is your startup, but you can change it if you have more than one drive or a partitioned drive (you can find the Scratch Disk/Performance preference in the Preferences for your program -- the location of preferences moves a little depending on your OS and version of the program...try the Edit menu, or press Command+K / Ctrl+K [Mac/PC]).

The best solution I have found -- and this is particularly applicable as hard drives are so inexpensive -- is to just buy a small drive, install it, and allow Elements/Photoshop to use it as a dedicated scratch drive. You may also want to increase your system's RAM if you find the computer is writing to the hard drive a lot.

I have more suggestions for Photoshop equipment on my betterphoto blog this week!
