Photography Question

need to decide between 2 lenses...

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
or
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS

I think about to buy the 400D & since I'm more than likely not going to spare the extra few hundred for the 30D (or should I?), I want some really good glass. Both of these are in the $1000 range, so price is not a factor when choosing between the two. I know L glass is supposed to be "superior" but then again that f/2.8 is looking mighty attractive with other. Suggestions?

I love my 400/XTi. I also love my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. So I can relate to your situations. But I might only caution you, if you're thinking of dropping $1k on glass, you may (or may not...) find yourself stuck with a pricey EFS lens, if in the reasonable future, you're likely to upgrade to a full-frame Canon, that can't accept EFS mounts. Then again, if you need that f/2.8 for faster shooting right now, that could be your answer, no matter what.
All that said, I bought an EFS 17-85 f/4-f/5.6, and really like that lens... But I am definitely thinking twice about any new lens investments in the EFS line, wondering whether I'll stay on the XTi for a "long haul", or if I feel any reasonable chance of changing up to a 5D (or new full-frame model yet to be released?) within a 2-4 year window... until I have a better feel, no more EFS investments (pricey ones, at least) for me just yet.

Ahh good point that I've yet to think about. Makes since. Well now I'm more considering the 24-70mm f2.8L...it's a huge lens but it seems like that's gonna be the best bet.
