Recommendation for a macro lens Hello. I was wondering if you all could recommend a good macro lens. I have a Canon Rebel XT and I am wanting to get closer to my subjects of butterflies, bugs, flowers, etc. I am considering the Canon EF 100 mm f/2,8 USM. Is this a good choice, or should I be looking at something different? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Amber

Amber, I don't have Canon equipment but I've heard nothing but good things about the Canon 100mm macro lens. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it if I had Canon gear. Happy Shopping!

I went with the Sigma 100mm macro. From what I read on the following review sites it seems that the 'true' macro lenses from Canon, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina are very equal in image quality; which was the most important factor after price. I believe I got both. Great image quality, good build and a savings over Canon. I still think the Canon would be a good choice, but these links may help convince you one way or the other.

Thanks for the websites. I am going to check them out while my kiddos are napping. Thanks again!

You cannot go wrong with the Canon 100mm f/2.8 in my view. It is my all-time favorite lens (so far, anyway) and does brilliant macro work, as well as non-macro. Interestingly, every August entry I've made to the contest this month, has been on the 100mm; I've got images (macro and non) from that lens scattered throughout my gallery, as more and more, it never leaves my XTi! If something happened to my gear, I think I'd replace that lens first.
