HELP My memory card says it needs formating Help I just shot this major wedding and when I got home to download the memory card says it needs formating, this is the card with the major amount of images on it, is there some way to get these off of the card, if there isn't I am completely screwed. I hope someone has a hopeful answer for me.

File recovery software. Is this a card that was formatted with the camera it was used in prior to you taking pictures with it?

Well I didn't format it which was a stupid thing to do, however after I wrote this I did discover a program on my laptop that allowed me to recover what was on my card, when I did I discovered that there was a lot on my card that I had taken previously. Lessons learned I'll never shoot something that huge again without formatting first.

You don't need to format a card every time you use it, but you do need to format a card any time it's first used with a camera. And probably within same brands. If you take a card from a D20 and put it in a 5D, you should format it to the 5D.

I had the same problem about 3 years ago when trying to download my CF card to a friends Mac. It would not recognize the card and he tried formatting it from the Mac and the card lost the images. I had to use a recovery program and was able to retrieve all but about 50 images. The learning curves and lessons we learn - I now have the habit of formatting when I insert it in the camera. Since I rotate 4-5 cards, I just think getting into that habit is safer.

Shouldn't format with the computer, just the camera. I reformat whenever I want to empty the card. Not really necessary but it empties that last 100 or so kilobytes that remain after you delete everything.

Even though I did manage to get most of my images back, there were a few that only half an image came through. I'd never seen my camera do anything like that before or maybe it was the card. not sure but before I shoot anything of that magnitude again I will make sure the card us formated.
