trouble resizing image to standard print size

I am struggling to edit a specific picture in Photoshop Elements and having trouble with the sizing. I am ordering prints from Mpix.com, and it seems that no matter how I resize the image or canvas in PE I am still losing too much to the crop on Mpix. I am using the 8x10 ratio when I resize on PE but it is not working. Any suggestions? Its for a client and I am desperate for an answer!!! (other than ordering an 8x12!) Also- is there a way to set that up from inside my Canon Rebel XTi 400D?

Hi Kateri. You'll probably get several responses, but here's my input. I've got the 400, and I believe the default setting for each image's ratio is 2:3. Meaning it is 1.5 times wider than it is tall. It would, for instance, make a convenient 4" x 6" print, or as you discovered, 8" x 12", without having to lose much, if anything, to cropping (depending on the printer hardware, etc.)
An 8x10 print has a ratio of 4:5. So it is 1.25 times wider than tall. You cannot make one image ratio fit naturally to the other, without cropping something, or, using stretching/skewing tools to distort the photo in one direction, to make up for the ratio differences.
Your best bet (I think) would be to take your camera's image file, and set the crop tool to 8x10---that way when you drag out the rectangle marking your crop, it is in the right proportion already, for your ultimate 8x10 print. You will have to cut something off, somewhere---thus mpix should not need to do any other cropping, and most importantly, YOU control what gets cut away by the crop, not them.
I feel like I remember reading in the manual, that the 400 does have alternate ratios you can set, but I don't have it with me today to check...

Thanks so much! I am hunting for my manual now:) Yes- I would definitely rather control the cropping myself, as this editing is a pain! Live and learn.
Thanks for the speedy response!

Back home now; I may be thinking of my old Sony---I can't find anything on the 400, about setting different aspect ratios.
