Photography Question

canon 17-40mm or 17-55mm

Hi everyone! I'm so confused. Im planning to sell my 17-40mm coz I feel it is a bit too wide. I'm considering 17-55mm as a replacement. I have read good reviews about the 17-55mm. is it worth the price? or i'll just keep my 17-40 and save up for the much more expensive 10-22mm and 24-70mm. someday. maybe hehehe Thank you in advance!

Manjo, I am confused by your question. You want to get rid of the 17-40mm because it is too wide, but want to replace it with a 17-55mm? Are you saying you want a bit more zoom than the 17-40mm offers?

The 17-55mm is a good lens, but it will only fit the APS-C sensor cameras, so if you ever get a full frame sensor, or a Mark III which is a 1.3 sensor, it will not work.

The 17-40mm is also a good lens, and it carries the L branding if that means anything to you ;-)

I would say unless you truly need the extra reach, or the IS is important to you, that there really isn't any reason to change lenses. Maybe somebody else will have a different opinion! ;-)

My 17-40mm is one of my best lenses. The image quality is outstanding.

Try out the link below. I setup a comparison between the 17-40 and the 17-55. It looks like the 17-40 is a slighlty sharper lens. If you want some more reach my vote would go for the Canon 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS. You already have an L class lens. I don't see you necessarily being satisfied with anything less. If price is a concern Sigma has introduced some very affordable lenses that give the Canon L's some competition.

The other question of course is if the 17-40 is too wide why would you save up for a 10-22 which is even wider?

Thank you for the reply. 17-40 is a bit short for me. I always take a few steps forward after 40mm. as for the 24-105 its a bit long for me as it would over lap my 70-200 already and I would loose my 17mm wide angle. I dont have a plan in going full frame so efs lenses are ok for me. I'll just wait if someone will buy my 17-40 with a good price then I think ill have the 17-55mmm. Thanks again!
