How to shoot close up group photos Hi There. I have a rebel with a wide angle 55mm lens. The problem I have is taking large group shots close up. What type of lens do I need to get close as well as really wide to get everybody in, instead of bunching them all together. Thanks

First, your 55mm lens is not a wide angle lens. On a 35mm camera or a full frame digital, it is a normal lens. In a digital with a crop factor, it is a short telephoto. You need something with a wider field of view like an 18mm on a digital or a 28mm on a 35mm.

Or you can use your feet! Step backwards until the whole group is within the frame.

Actually, considering the propensity for edge distortion on wide-angle lenses, that is your best choice.

Hi Samantha, Anne and Kerry are right. Using a wide-angle for a group shot is generally bad and terrible for the people near the edge of the frame. For a group on several levels I would generally want to be more than 10 feet from the subjects. Thanks, John Siskin

Posing the group at a 44 degree angle/half one way half the other. and using angles can and will get that group a whole lot closer and make it easier to shoot with any lens. I do hope this helps, Debby
