On Camera Flash Distance

I have noticed that when I use my flash in a dark reception hall with my 24-70 f/2.8 lens that if I am not within about 6 feet that my photos are underexposed. Also when it is quite dark would you recommend shooting flash direct with a stofen diffuser or still using bounce flash or increasing the flash exposure to +1 or +2 stops? What is the normal working distance with flash at a wedding?

Built-in flash or an accessory flash (make/model)? What settings (camera exposure mode & ISO, flash settings)? Sample pic?

I'm am using a canon 30D with a 24-70mm lens and a 580 ex speedlite mounted on a bracket set at full flash, iso 3200. I am about 10 to 15 feet away from the shot, it is in a basement banquet room with no windows and pot lights for lighting.

What do you mean by "full flash"? You mean M 1/1 (fixed at full power)? What exposure mode, shutter speed and aperture are you setting?

ISO 400-800 should be all you need for the 580EX to give good exposure to your subject in a dim room, even bouncing from a high ceiling. However, it cannot light the entire room. The most a camera- or bracket-mounted flash can do is light your relatively near subject. Even setting ISO 3200 is apt to leave the background dark unless you set long shutter speeds.

What mode are you shooting in? Av would be my guess. I had the same problem in the beginning and it was explained to me that in Av or Tv mode the flash system is designed to basically give some fill flash. You should be able to go with Manual mode, ISO 400, 1/60 sec and as much as f/5.6 without a problem.

Thank you for your kind replies, I have been using program mode and flash with no exposure compensation.
