Updated LCD vs CRT monitor debate

I just read through the forum and noticed the LCD vs CRT discussions are quite old; does the "CRT is light years better than LCD" rule still hold true, even with today's LCDs? I am just starting out, but want to get the best (within $ reason) equipment now rather than having to upgrade in a year or two. Are there *any* LCDs that are worth looking at? This monitor will pull double duty as our standard PC monitor (for home finances and general websurfing, we are not gamers). I'd like to stay under $600 if possible, as I know I need to add calibration (Spyder or Eye One, but that's a different debate!) Thanks!

  Shelby,

I recently bought a new computer and chose not to upgrade my CRT moniter. For a cople of reasons... I didn't want my kids touching the LCD screen and ruining it and also I am not crazy about having to look at the screen directly to see images good. I can see images at all angles on my CRT. It would be nice to have a flat screen though! :)
