Photography Question

Joan E. Herwig

penguins in Patagonia

I have opportunity to go to where the penguins are in Patagonia in October--I have no experience photographing penguins. Could someone recommend what equipment to take (lenses, tripod vs. monopod etc.) My camera is Nikon D2Xs.
Thank you,
Joan

I think it's more a question of how close the guided tour, if it is one, is going to let you get to them. What kind of lenses do you have?

I will not be on a guided tour, but will be traveling w/ local friend & staying on the Penninsula Valdez where huge numbers of the penquins gather every October. I don't know for certain how close we can get, but it seems to be advertised that you can practically walk among them. I have 24mm-120mm (36 - 180 equivilant) and a 200mm (300mm equivialnt). What are your thoughts of tripod vs. monopod?
Joan

Since you're on your own, and you only have two lenses, take both of them. When penguins are gathered by their nesting areas you can get pretty close. If you plan on going out in the early morning or evening take the tripod. Shouldn't need a monopod for a 200mm
You can also get some pictures when the congregate at the surf, waiting to see if no killer whales are around.
There should also be a chance to get some seals. Keep some distance with those.
