Photography Question

Jared L. Loftus

which camera?

I am very new to photography and would like to know what a good camera would be for just starting out. I like nikon (but only because it was the most used in a diving mag.) but I dont know which one's best. If anyone could help me that would be great

This question is asked quite a bit and sometimes generates some harsh responses, but I would rather try to offer some assistance instead of say you should just search the forum for previous responses and maybe generate some new ideas.

Your questions is very general; so what you might have to respond with is what is your budget? What features are you looking for? Do you want a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses? Etc, etc. Even with that information you are going to get biased information I believe. I own a Canon 30D so of course I will say Canon. The next person will say Nikon. In all honesty there isn't a 'bad' digital camera out there. Technology has come a long way and whatever your purchase price wise will be relatively similar between brand when it comes down to features and quality.

When you mention diving I believe that Nikon and/or other manufacturers make some great housings for the Nikon for underwater use. I could be wrong, but I don't see as many housings out there for other brands such as Canon. So if diving will be a primary use for your purchase then Nikon would be the better fit.

Hope this helps and if you want just give some ideas of what price range and features you are hoping for and some of us will try and help you as much as possible.

  Jared,

You SHOULD search through the forums and see what other responses have been given to this very question. There are some very good posts on this subject. Do you really want to buy a Canon camera just because someone says they are better than Nikon or a Nikon because I say they are better than Canon?

Pick up a copy of a good book for beginners of photography. They'll have some tips on how to choose the right camera and make the choice that fits within your budget. Only you can determine what you really need in a camera.

Above all, buy the thing from a reputable company. You may find a great deal somewhere else; but, if it is too good to be true, it probably is.
