OFF TOPIC: Questionaire

Hello Everyone!
Excuse the "off topic" but I do not know where else to place this question!

My question: What is the "trick" behind Jim asking us to identify names from a list of 250 in his new survey?

Any guesses?

Best and have as much fun reading the list as we have...

Alexander

Alexander, I started the questionaire, but cancelled when I got to that part. I don't know what BP was thinking with that useless question.

  Chris,
Both my wife and I got this via email.
The email asks you to click a link, it brings up a reply form. Checking the source text (Ctrl-U)you can see that the form goes to www.surveymonkey.com
Check their website.
Maybe someone will reveal the "secret" of that dumb question.

Well, did you recognize any? Photographers, something else? If it was a list of photographers, they might be trying to see how many bp people would recognize any from the past that made a life in photography but are not in the immediate pop culture loop.
But it's could also be the marketing ploy of identifying a group without asking you what group you're in.
Do you know Giacomo Agostini is? Kenny Roberts?
What about Hal Smith?

  Hi Alexander,

The survey is real. The questions - including the 250 names question - are designed to help us understand the needs, wants, and mindset of the BetterPhoto community.

There's nothing really hidden in that one question, and there is no right or wrong answer. It's just meant to be a fun quiz of sorts. Many people choose to answer it and a few don't - either way is okay by me.

We've been using SurveyMonkey for years. They offer a service which makes it easy for us to tabulate answers, and thus get some indications of the best direction to take BP. The answers are only seen by me and a small group of my closest advisors.

I appreciate that you did not post the link to this particular survey because this was a private survey - meant only for a small segment of the greater BetterPhoto audience. We often conduct public surveys and when we do, the survey will be posted on a public page at BetterPhoto. In fact, there is a public survey going on right now on the course detail pages.

The name question likely assumes that the respondents are American (a quick scan shows not a single French name, for instance). As a foreigner, I concluded the questionaire was not meant for me, and zapped it. Probably the marketing people want to know how connected we are.

The responsdents and names are not exclusively American. You'll see names of many different nationalities and ethnic groups. They are selected at random.

After Pepe Le Peu there's not a lot of French to choose from.

  Hello Jim!

Thanks for replying to my question/statement. I know a bit about marketing (many years) and still cannot catch the reason why you put (or allowed to be put in) this item. In my opinion it only can generate negative comments/feelings. People will dump it (see above), or reply with a zero or 255 - so it is meaningless and not even remotely a "fun factor".

BTW, I also noticed right away the inconsistencies in choosing the names - if that question was meant to be a serious one. I agree you got a few other names, such as Chinese names - no 15 letter slavics for example. Curiously all are rather short names.

My hunch: We won't see such questions in the future - right Bossman?

My biggest beef about our beloved BP: The tremendous increase of advertising. If you do not know BP than, to a casual visitor, BP looks with advertising plastered all over, just like other sites. Less is/maybe is/might be more for us!

Best to your super gang and you,

Alexander
