Photography Question

Michelle N. Russell

Does anyone own a Mall Photo Studio??

My mom recently came across a mall photo studio in our area that is for sale. I'm seriously looking into it. That style of photography is not my passion, but the current owner does not spend much time in the studio, so I wouldn't be tied down there. I just really want to talk to someone who owns one. PLEASEPLEASE let me know if you do and if you have some time to answer some questions!

With what you are saying, I am thinking it is probably a BAD idea...

I am guessing that this mall studio was a generic, mass conglomerate that went under like a "Picture People" co.

If it was a more of a personal studio then what did they do? If it is your own studio then you will be more involved then you think! Heck just having your own business can be quite the time-consuming task. Just because the previous owner wasn't in the studio a bunch doesn't mean he wasn't tied down. Can you give us a rundown of what he did and what the hours were and how many people were employed there?

No offense but with your attitude towards it The "style of photography is not my passion" and "I wouldn't be tied down there" comments concern me. With that mentality, it would seem like you would be in the same position as the previous owner in no time...

If something isn't your passion, then it won't go far and you won't get the business because it will reflect in your work...

Owning a business, then owning / leasing a place means you are the exact opposite of "not tied down."

Is the mall is a great location? Yes. You will have thousands of people walking past the studio and seeing your name...

BUT, the mall will surely will cost MUCH more in regards to a lease payment then it would be renovating your house to become a home studio, heck, it would probably be cheaper month to month to BUY A HOUSE and remodel it for your business... So you will need to do even more work, just to pay the lease and then do even more to pocket some profit. No one is in the business to lose money or go bankrupt!

If you don't want to be tied down to the place then you will have to hire a second manager and then some people to do the photography work for you? Now you will need to pay them a wage of sorts, medical benefits? You will definitely need insurance in case anyone falls or hurts themselves, etc... then you will need a receptionist to make appointments or so forth.

When you own a photography company, you can do things to make money without paying a lot of money. Or you can pay a ton of money and break even... Get in touch with me via email or private message and give me the rundown on what your goals are and maybe I can give you some helpful advice.

What is your style of photography? You don't have to be tied down to what the previous studio was... Granted they may include the backdrops and props and whatnot but you can make it whatever you want. No offense but if your passion is nature photography and you want it to showcase just showcase you work then you probably won't bring home the money and you should stick to just entering your stuff in contests...

Thank you for your thoughts. I will add them to my list of questions to ponder and discuss with the wise people I've pulled in to help me sort through everything. I think I'm covered in the area of people without direct mall studio experience, but if I need more, I will definitely be in touch. Thank you so much for the offer and thank you for your response!
