Best camera for close up
I am looking to purchase a camera that works well close up. I make jewelry that I photograph and also take pictures of closeup flowers and foliage. I have an Olympus C770 Ultra zoom and works okay but I think I need one with more pixels this is only 4 and I want to make large pictures like 22 X 28". Anyone have suggestions. I was thinking Nikon D40 but not sure it will be good for closeup. Thanks Barbara

Barbara, taking good shots of jewelry close up requires more than just a camera - you need to have a good close up ("macro") lens as well as a good way to light the product. The D40, and other DSLR cameras, have interchangeable lenses. While the 'kit' lens that comes with the basic outfit might be suitable for general shooting, it will not be capable of getting very good images of something as small as your pieces or of flowers, etc. So you will need to include a macro lens in your budget. As for lighting, again, you want to have the proper illumination on the subject. That might mean smooth diffuse light on some items, and sharply defining harsher light on others. SO here again you need to anticipate the cost of some kind of external lighting equipment - the pop-up flash won't cut the mustard. I know this sounds like a lot of trouble, but remember that pros on Madison avenue get paid handsomely to shoot fine jewelry - and they sometimes use upwards of 6 or more lights in a huge studio just to get the exact highlight and shadow effects they're looking for.

Bob Thanks for the info on camera. Yes I know they have another lens on D40. Most of my shots are taken outside but sometimes I bring them in and I do take them under some homemade light setup. I have a jewelry website if you would like to see some www.gemworksltd.com Some good some bad pictures on site. I need to take more time to take the pictures. Always in a rush. Thanks alot. Barbara
