Canon Rebel XTi / 400D Battery Life?

I've just upgraded from the original Canon Digital Rebel to the Rebel XTi / 400D.

Has anyone had a chance to put the Rebel XTi / 400D through a full-day of shooting to get a feel for its battery life?

I know the NB-2LH battery is smaller than the BP-511s that I've been using in my original Rebel, but the new camera is supposed to be more power-efficient.

I ordered 2 extra batteries with the Rebel XTi, so I should be covered. I was just wondering if someone could give me an idea of how the battery life on the two cameras will compare.

Thanks,

  Hi Chris,
I have the XTi, and have had no major problems shooting all day. The only time I have run into trouble is if I am am at a sporting event and am shooting non stop, or using alot of flash. That will tend to run the battery down much quicker.

Get yourself the battery grip, it holds two batteries and great to shoot verticals shots with the addtional shutter button

I have the XTi and have not found battery life to be a problem. I always carry one spare and have not needed to get another one so far. I agree that if you are using a lot of flash a battery grip would make sense.

Thanks for the responses. I never use the on-camera flash, so that isn't really a concern. On long shoots with the Rebel, I sometimes would turn off the LCD to extend battery life. Since the LCD on the XTi is used for camera settings, I need to pretty much leave that on.

I've thought about getting the battery grip. I might look at that again.

I also found the batter grip, helps if youi have large hands. It makes the camera much easier to handle.

I use, most of the times, a Canon 70-200 f2.8L that is rather heavy and large for the small Rebel body so the battery grip gives better handling and helps to balance the camera/lens combination.

  Here's an update.

Saturday, I shot 570 images with the Rebel XTi without changing batteries. At the end, the battery meter was actually only 1 notch down from full, so I don't know how much longer the battery would have lasted.

I was concerned about this because the NB-2LH battery for the Rebel XTi has about half the mAh of the BP-511A batteries that I've been using with the Rebel. Canon has obviously improved the efficiency of the camera, because I was never able to get that many shots on one battery charge with the Rebel.

So far, I'm very impressed with the new camera.
