Photography Question

How to layer a picture

I am trying to put a picture on a picture of a piece of notebook paper, essentially making the picture look drawn, but can't figure out how to make the lines of the notebook show through the picture of my friend's son. Anybody know how to do this. I am using Photoshop CS3

Make sure the picture is in its own layer on top of the notebook paper. With the picture's layer selected, play with the opacity and blending modes until you like what you've got.

  Hello Stephaine,

I think I have made a photo like you described.. please look at my gallery and you will see a photo titled Photoshoped cat... I have what I think you are looking for.. a photo on top of a photo of notebook paper that looks like a drawing showing the paper lines through it.. I have the original image and the " drawing effect " shot on the same page.. if this is what you are looking for.. let me know.. ill tell you how I done it..

Keep up the great shooting.. take care..

Robert

  Robert,

It's pretty close, but I don't want an outline of the original photo, only the boy or in your case the cat. The effect I am going for is for it to look like I drew it on the paper. I have already made the image to look line drawn and now I want to layer it on the picture of the notebook paper. I am trying to put together like a journal type presentation for my friend.

  Hi again Staci

If you just want to get the photo of the boy onto the photo of note book paper all you do is this.

Open both photos, the boy and the paper. Get the MOVE tool, and while the photo of the boy is active.. left clikc and drag hinm onto the paper photo. You will see two layers now, Layer 1 and the background. Now to size the boys photo. hit Ctrl+T, that brings the free transform tool up.. resize as you need and then make layers Opacity as you want to show the lines of the paper behind the boy.

I hope is helps..

Robert

Think you're missing a step to cut the boy out to separate him from the background of the original photo.

Can you post the images you are trying to use here? There may be a variety of different approaches to take depending on what the images are like. My first idea would be to do this with three layers:

1. the base/background layer as the paper.

2. add the sketch in a second layer and trim.

3. dupicate the background layer and drg it above layer 2, make it a clipping group and reduce the opacity.

These three steps will help you target the amound of bleed. I can show you with the samples if you post them.

Thank you all so much. I will try to post the picture to show you what I am talking about, but I think that all of your suggestions together solved my problem.

I want to post this so you can see what I am talking about, but it is 4.3 MB. How do I post it if it is too large?

Change the size the pictures to about 750 pixles on the long side, make sure not to save it over your original. BTW, people on this site rarely trust anyone who doesn't have a gallery, or only has a few pictures in their gallery. If you post some work, people probably won't think you are just here to harass others, and won't challenge you like that. Sorry, but there are too many people who do exactly what I mentioned, they go around attacking people just to start trouble.

Try to focus on what is helpful and avoid becoming involved in the rest of it. I look forward to seeing the images.

Thanks for all your help. I put the picture in my gallery, so if you have any suggestions just let me know. My husband and I are also going to be taking classes at the local community college to really get us started. We are really having a good time with this program and the camera. Once again, thanks.

Do you know how to change layer options from normal to things like overlay, screen, hard light, etc...?

  Staci.

On my photo I put up for you to look at, the top photo of the cat is what you are trying for.. I have both the line art and the original on it to show you the difference..

Robert

I didn't polish this up much, but I did do a dynamic range correction for the page on the left, removed the pencil, and moved the 'drawing' over by copy/paste, then set the layer with the drawing to 'Darken' mode. You can obviously do more with it but this is a variation on what I suggested earlier.

Thank you so much. I will mess around with it and see if I can get it right this time. You have been quite helpful.
